Hey guys! We've got a Moomba Outback V wakeboard boat and I've been trying to figure the best way to approach a jump off the wake.. Is it best to come straight across, come in on an angle, close to the boat or further back?? I've got a stock 650SX and we usually run with full ballast tanks, so I'm getting a 3-3 and a half foot wake. I usually get swamped in the face when I hit the wake.. Any tips for an eager beginner?? Thanks guys!

I will go towards the boat head on, not fromm behind, at a slight angle, and hit it about 20-30 feet behind the boat if it is running fast. It changes dpeending on the boats speed and water depth.

NUMBER ONE thing I learned, is dont hit the first wake, roll over into the 2nd one, and you will boost twice as high. Once you get the roll in down, you can do a small bunny hop instead and get some serious boost

what i mean by head on, is i dont approach the wake from the rear of the boat, I will cut into the wake and be heading backwards of the wake, if that makes any sense

The first wake is absolutely the best for big air assuming the boat is going at the right speed, just below planing. And you best know what you're doing and the boat owner/driver.
I hit it 3-6 feet behind the boat. Biggest flips and rolls.

Weird. Guess everyone is different? Me and all my buddies hit it how I said. Most of our wakes we hit are boats passing at speed though, not going duper slow making a giant wake, which I guess is what op was asking about

Ditto, hit the lip of the wake right behind the boat.

Hit it as close to the boat you can. That's where the lip is biggest and steepest. 20 feetback the wake is a fraction of the size and not step at all. But if you insist on hitting the wake that far back hop over the first roller into the pocket of the second

when going for air, I agree, the first wake with all white water right behind the boat is the best for getting air. The absolute best is when the boat's hull actually lowers the water about a foot or two right behind the boat right before the wake. So you dip down and then launch up. amazing.

I dont have any baller friends, so we dont get to hit the wakes close to the boat. I dont wanna piss any people off. We have been flagged over a few times though, but I guess im so used to hitting the 2nd wake I dindt even try. regardless, Im getting plenty of air. Ill try the 1st wake next time I get a chance

Thanks for all the great info guys! I'll play around with some launches this weekend. Should I be popping/bunny hopping before I hit the wake? I'm just crouching and bracing for the jump when I gun it before I hit the wake. I'm thinking this might have something to do with why I get mega-splashed in the face whenever I hit the wake...

I guess it all depends on the boat you are hitting.
At JLS, our local spot, we never see wakeboard boats......EVER!
Tugboats, pilot boats and big yatchs put out a monstruos SECOND wake which is all glassy and perfect for take off....

Oh I know there big, but the problem with em is they are just huge rollers, there's no lip to em. Still can launch, but you don't get the lip to throw you strait up. Still fun tho.

I usually ride behind a 20 ft. 4 Winns and aim for the second wake just behind the boat. I try to hop down into the wake at whatever angle works so I don't plow through it.

If its your or a friends boat, weight the boat for surfing and make the cleanest wake you can get. Hit the wake 5-10' back of the boat. Come in perpendicular to the wake. I go between 10-11.5 mph If you turn slightly into the wake it also cleans the wake up.

Not to be preachy but unless you know the boat owner and they're in on the wake jumping, stay your state's legal minimum from the boat. Boaters and po-po hate us enough as it is...

With that said, if you know the boat, jump it heading from the bow to the stern of the boat about 5-7 feet from the stern. If you don't know the boat owner, aim for the second wake (after the required legal minimum distance). The river cruise boat we chase, i aim for the part of the wake i can't see about 50-75 feet back.

If you are getting hit in the face. Then you are likely plowing through it. It takes a bit of throttle timing to get the max height. Also try sitting back in the tray with your butt low to bring the nose up if you can't do it with throttle.
