Blaster Starter Removal

I finally managed to remove the two M12 bolts from the starter and removed from the engine, but it is still lodged in the ski. I am able to twist and turn, but not able to pull out from underneath the motor. Someone please help me improve my pull out game.

Just for future reference, M# refers to the diameter of the threaded section and not the diameter of the wrench you use. Important to know if you ever order replacement parts. For example, a bolt that uses a 10mm wrench is a M6 bolt, not a M10 bolt. An M12 bolt would use a 18mm wrench. I didn't know this at first either.

As for your actual question, what @beacom said.

Pull the front cover off tap the starter from the inside.

Personally its easier to remove the motor

It ain't rocket science and the type of coupler Yamaha uses is very forgiving. Just pull the 4 bolts and shims(note where they were) holding the engine down and slide it forward. To reinstall, put the shims back in the same locations, measure the coupler gap with a gauge (should be 2mm-2.5mm) and tighten down. Don't forget loctite. Not many things easier to do.

You can use a large flathead screwdriver and "lightly" tap it in between the case and starter changing position from one side of the starter nose to the other and walk it out. Or like someone else said tap it out from inside the flywheel cover.

I'm realizing its more work, but I want to take the exhaust off instead of removing the engine.

I took off the upper exhaust by removing three bolts which was very easy. I then removed 8 bolts from the lower exhaust, but it will not budge at all. I also tried taking 4 bolts (2 long and 2 short) out of the pipe that connects the upper and lower exhaust, but that wont budge either. I looked everywhere for additional bolts, but couldnt find any.

Do I just need to add PB Blaster and tap/pry them apart?

Went out and bought a dead blow hammer. Great investment! Both pipes came right off. Ended up tearing a gasket, but I was expecting to replace them anyways. Really enjoying this project now got the starter out perfectly. While I wait for the gasket I decided I am going to clean the entire front of the ski taking out the gas tank and water lock. Also the exhaust pipes are obviously very dirty and gunky on the inside. Any advice on cleaning them or is that not necessary? Thanks for the help everyone!
