Saturday I had an experience that I have heard of, but had never personally seen or encountered personally.
While I was filling my gas tank, I spilled a little fuel accidentally when the tank "burped" and splashed the fuel into the bilge. I didn't think it was a big deal, put the jug up and closed the hood up. I started the ski up (still on the trailer) and everything seemed fine. Hit the throttle once and, "BOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!" The hood jumped up and orange flames were seen around the entire circumference of the hood.
The following were damaged:
Hood straps----Blew both straps off from their mounting location in front of the handlepole.
Front hood hooks----Bent up about a 1/4" off the hull.
Hood Latch----Bent the latch and nearly blew out the center locking knob.
Hood----Hood had a small chunk of fiberglass knocked off when the hood jumped up and hit the bottom of the handlepole.
While repairing the damage later that night, I found what appeared to be the source of the spark that ignited the fuel fumes. A small nick was found in the red wire that goes to the start/stop switch and the wire was very close to the throttle drum on the carb. My thought is that the wire was cut when I hit the throttle and the throttle drum arced across the hot wire, igniting the fuel.
