Saturday I had an experience that I have heard of, but had never personally seen or encountered personally.

While I was filling my gas tank, I spilled a little fuel accidentally when the tank "burped" and splashed the fuel into the bilge. I didn't think it was a big deal, put the jug up and closed the hood up. I started the ski up (still on the trailer) and everything seemed fine. Hit the throttle once and, "BOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!" The hood jumped up and orange flames were seen around the entire circumference of the hood.

The following were damaged:

Hood straps----Blew both straps off from their mounting location in front of the handlepole.

Front hood hooks----Bent up about a 1/4" off the hull.

Hood Latch----Bent the latch and nearly blew out the center locking knob.

Hood----Hood had a small chunk of fiberglass knocked off when the hood jumped up and hit the bottom of the handlepole.

While repairing the damage later that night, I found what appeared to be the source of the spark that ignited the fuel fumes. A small nick was found in the red wire that goes to the start/stop switch and the wire was very close to the throttle drum on the carb. My thought is that the wire was cut when I hit the throttle and the throttle drum arced across the hot wire, igniting the fuel.

parrdaddy

No he will not!
Yeah, first your 28' trailer tries to kill me, then after I get it back to you, your ski blows up right next to me and tries to kill me :skull2: I guess I better start watching you :haha: But serisously, it scared the crap out of both of us. I'd say Chick is pretty lucky he didn't get his weewee burned off since it was in direct fire, literally

It was my blue and silver Wammer.

Jeremy----why didn't you tell everyone that YOU spilled fuel in it the next day while I was going to get us some Gatorades? :dunno:

Parr and Kaveman started running when I started the ski back up. :Banane01:

Chick,
I did close to the same thing.

I was on my stock SXI at the time, and I was learning barrel rolls in the flat, and I was pancakin em' and I landed one upside down, and the filler line from the gas door came off and spilt fuel in the hull. Well there was a little piece of wire sticking out from the coil to the plugs...

KABOOM..... Blew me off the ski, and burnt me, and blew my glove apart.
Broke hood, and straps, broke latch, BENT POLE.... colosal damage.
the ski was still smoking and friends came to the rescue... It blew me a good 6-8' from ski.

My tip... dont do that....

Chick, I would check your coil lines to your plugs... might be something there....
(looking for pics of burns.)
Glad your ok Chick
