SXR Bought my first stand up this weekend...

I found a nice 2009 SXR on clist and decided to pull the trigger. The ski came with a R&D ride plate and intake grate, K&N flame arrestors, and a pole shock pad. Guy I bought it from is in the Army and has been riding stand ups for years. Mechanically she seems in excellent condition. Starts right up and is very fast to get up and go. I am 33 yrs old, 5"7 200 lbs, and I got right up my first try no problem. Its when I start pushing it where the fun begins and I will need to practice to get the hang of it. Lots of fun though and I am super sore this morning after riding it all weekend.

I think I paid a little more than I should have at $6500 but he did drive it down 4 hrs to deliver it to me and he is being stationed in Alaska soon, so I dont mind helping out a member of our Armed Forces, as I am a vet myself. Plus I felt better buying it from a person who enjoyed the sport and took care of his ride. This thing runs perfect.

I'm sure I will have lots of questions but my searching the forums has answered many already. I know I need to do some light epoxy work, there is a small crack on the back corner near the drain plug...and a few scratches here and there, mostly the nose and rub rails.

Its a lot different than my FZS for sure!

Nice ski. Most likely the crack you're seeing near the drain is just in the outer gel coat layer. I wouldn't worry about it. Probably the first of many to come.

Price seems a little high, but if the ski makes you happy, then that's all that matters.

I miss having my SXR for the lake and for cruising. My wife liked riding the SXR the most out of all the ski's I've had.

I think youre right about the crack, its like the black gel coat just broke off a bottom corner piece about the size of a nickel. I was thinking a solid stick of two part epoxy and sand it down then paint it gloss black should make it disappear. Either way I dont think the hull leaks at all so I'm sure its simply cosmetic. I was actually suprised of how little water was in the hull even after all the wipe outs my friends and I had that day.

Yeah the price was high, I just couldn't find anything at that time and my original plan was to buy a brand new 2011 but they were all sold out in the entire state of TX...But of course after I commit to buy it, a couple other SXR's a super nice 07' Superjet come up for sale all for about a grand less. Still, the difference wasnt that much especially when you add in the few aftermarket parts he already had added and the delivery to my house which saved me a day of driving, so in the end I'm happy. He also threw in one of those racing fuel tanks with hose and ratio cup, and an almost full tank of kawi oil.

Anyway, I am interested in a few of the must have mods, such as adding a bilge. I would also like to redo the turf and fix the nose piece and rub rails just to clean it up a bit. I guess I need to start searching the threads.

Any advice on my first or other "must have" mods is welcome!

I am also considering buying a used Superjet once I get the hang of this, so I can have both rides with their pros and cons. Plus I hope one of my friends will take a liking to the sport and try to learn with me.

Is the rulemate marine 500 the best bilge to buy? I dont want one activated with switch, I'd prefer an auto bilge if possible.

Thanks, and great forum here. I hope one day I can shred like many of you can.

I think most guys here just run a standard bilge on a switch and leave it run the whole time you are riding.
I have dual bilges in my ski, one is running non stop and I'll toggle the other one on if I plan on spending a lot of time under water.
I bought mine at walmart.

For the average weekend warrior the SXR doesn't need many upgrades as they are a pretty fun ski in stock form. I am assuming that you know the SXR is a poor freestyle ski, they are mostly for carving around or riding buoy courses. So as for the few mods you may want to consider, I would suggest you add a duckbill drain or a versa plug drain and forget the bilge. Unless you're going to be doing a ton of hood tricks, then you really don't need a bilge on your SXR. My SXR rarely takes on any water (I only race buoys or carve on it though) The OEM ride plate is good but you will want to switch out the intake grate. The OEM handle poles are pretty much junk also so you may want to put that on your wish list. (AM poles are expensive) .

I prefer the DUCKBILL over the versa plug, here's mine

An easy, cheap mod is to add a bow eye so it can be locked onto your trailer

Also as for the chip in the Gel coat on the strake, I wouldn't worry about it, that's pretty common. The good thing to know about the SXR is that the foam in the Hull is a closed cell polyethylene (Like beer cooler foam but it won't melt when exposed to fuel) so it will never waterlog. SO, in the unlikely event the chip is leaking, an SXR hull leak is no problem at all, water will just drain out the drain plug

Thanks for the information...I am at work right now but I think that is exactly where my chip is at. I am just OCD on somethings, all my stuff is clean so I thought I would try to fix it. Maybe I will just worry with it later when it gets cooler out and enjoy learning to ride for now. The duckbill looks interesting and I have read of some folks using them. How does it compare with the one-way scupper that installs in the same spot?

My SXR already has the R&D ride plate and intake grate. I assume from reading this is a decent setup for carving and crusing around?

whether to go with a duck bill or a versa plug is just a personal preference thing, they both work equally as well. I had the duck bill before the versa plug was available so I just stuck with it. Your set up sounds like it will work fine for carving and cruising around.

Hey Matt. There's a few of us in Kingwood that ride the San jacinto quite often. I will pm you my phone number.

Awesome...I was just on the water around 5:45 over by the restaurants this afternoon and both my watershoe bungee laces broke and I lost one shoe out there when I was taking off, freaking hilarious. So it just happens I am out there with one shoe on and one floating out in the river, and 3 jet skis come flying by looking at me like I'm crazy....lol. At least the shoe floats so it was recovered. Time for some real laces not this thin bungee crap.

Anyway, before my "incident" I was out there practicing some figure 8's and I did a few but some of the right handers would tip me. I can do them slowly sometimes but the faster ones get me often. I'm thinking I need to lower my center of gravity more and just hit the throttle quicker and more smoothly out of the turn. After a while I decided to rest on my knees a bit and do some more figure 8's...that went well for a bit until I started doing partial 360's on accident at first as I was turning much faster than when I was standing, but hey I thought that was fun so I did a few on purpose to feel when it was going to slide out and I almost held on to one of them but I ended up dragging myself a bit and then jumping up back on.

I am going to get the hang of this...Thanks everyone for all the help so far. Its encouraging me

If you get bored this weekend come out to Baytown. There is a R5 racing event going on. I'll be there and my buddy on a sxr, we will both be competing in freestyle

I wish I could make it, sounds like it will be an awesome time. Looks like I am headed up to Longview with the family, Aunt has the cancer and it doesn't look good.

I am pretty excited to learn more about the sport though, I hope to make it to another event sometime and watch the pros give it a go. Much respect to all those that can ride, I am learning everything looks much easier than it is...at least starting out.

I have decided to keep my eyes open for a nice superjet that is near me so that I can have one of each and learn to ride them both. Plus when my bro or friends come by we can both go out. I found a clean 07' in San Antonio area but its a little more than I wanted to pay unless it is a great deal I might jump on it. How does it look?

The duck bill will dry rot very quick. Go pick up a dr. For the rec rider who wants to do everything but flat water freestyle the sxr is king. If you want a little more snap get a temp sensor plug form fp. Or make your own and you can dual cool it. This is as very easy and common setup and won't compromise the life of the motor.
