Bound to happen eventually

I guess lake Hartwell is hard on pistons. I ran it up on the trailer and brapped it to clear the water and everything was fine, I thought anyway. After I got home I found this. I ate a rear piston and the front c-clip came loose and grooved my front cylinder. I couldn't find anything else wrong so i am assuming this is was just wore out as it has a ton of hard hours on it. If you guys have any other ideas let me know I sure don't want this to happen to my new top end when i get it.

Thanks,
Matt

so far the crank seems ok, but i will inspect it further when i get the cases apart. there is a lot of piston chunks floating around in there. I just hope i can use the crank if not this rebuild is going to take awhile.

Problem is the aluminum will get smashed in and around the bearings.:banghead:

dont tell me this.. i'm about to move down to that lake.. :(

and what crab said. any tiny bits of allum dust that got munche up, if any of that got in the bearing it will quickly wear it out untill it to fails taking the new topend with it... just view my latest carnage threads. had less than 20gals on a new rebuild and then the crank letgo.

man that is just what im afraid of. it has a ton of smashed up powdered piston pieces in the cases. i just dont need to buy a crank, but its better then 2 top ends i guess.

the lake was very nice! soft sandy beaches to run the ski on and blue/green water. i thought i was in the ocean when i first looked down.
we have muddy/merky water here and rocks around the edge so it was a nice change.

Get a new SBT crank, then no worries.:crutches:

the piston wash looks lean on the front cylinder to me.
if this was a single carb motor, I think that the rear
cylinder was WAY lean which is what killed it.
the front cylinder has to be rich on a single carb motor
for the rear to be OK

Maybe if the price is right. I need an ignition, FPP exhaust manifold, ect... So I might just wait to next winter to do that conversion. Then again after hearing how great your ski runs, I might just buy a lamey... haha

Seriuosly though, I might be in the market. Especially if this tool buys my 4-wheeler tonight...
