Super Jet broken positive ring terminal on a new SJ ski

This was the last tank of the first 1 gallon oil since I bought the ski (2010 brand new one) and today the positive ring terminal broke. I've seen this same issue on another guy SJ. Is this a common issue and what should be done to not happen again? Is soldering the terminal recommended or just crimp it? oh.. what size ring and what gauge wire is it? :)

Thanks and sorry if this has been discussed before.

I had the same issue on my new '06 within the first season. I was in freshwater so I just crimped one on but if you ride salt I would solder one on.

Here is the way I do it, get a 1/4 copper lug for the size wire you have, I use needle nose vice grips to hold it and hold it over a propane torch, heat the lug up til the lug melts the solder, melt solder into it till its about halfway full, very quickly take the end of the wire that you have cut off and removed the insulation from and shove it into the hot lug , let it cool , put a piece of heat shrink over it, heat it with a heat gun and shrink it on, done, finato finished.

so you dont crimp it, just solder it? I am not sure of the stock wire size, looks like 6 or 8 gauge to me..

I crimp it, cover all bare wire with liquid electrical tape, cover it with heat shrink, and then seal both ends of the heat shrink with liquid electrical tape.

That will work for freshwater, but eventually will fail with saltwater use.

Think about it, whats your point of contact between the lug and the wire when you crimp it, now whats the contact are on a soldered on lug, the solder fuses all the smaller strands together and puts them in direct contact with the lug, the only way to do it better would be to find adhesive lined heat shrink tubing to totally seal the connection with. Not really necessary in fresh water use, most advisable in salt water usage.
