Broken steering bracket, can this be repaired? How do I fix this?

So this just happened today. My feet came out of the tray while jumping wake and I wound up slamming down on top of my ski. I smashed my shin up pretty bad on the back of the tray but even worse, I broke the cast aluminum bracket that holds the steering plate in place. I'm afraid that getting a replacement would probably be next to impossible since the FX1 is so rare. How do I fix this? Are there any aftermarket replacements for this?

You're definetly going to need a new pole, you cant repair that. May as well go aftermarket at this point unless a superjet pole fits. Some one will have to chime in on that

Can it be welded? I've seen people TIG weld cast aluminum before but I don't know if that would be strong enough to support my weight and pull me out of the water

A correctly done weld would be stronger than the surrounding material. And that’s the problem. Judging by the break, you’ve got some corrosion. You could spend all that time and have it wind up breaking right next to the weld. I have fixed that exact break by welding and it is a pia to do correctly. First you have to drill rivets, heat , and extract the broken piece of the socket without breaking it further. Then you have to get all that green epoxy off. And welding cast that is corroded is a whole nother subject. It wasn’t worth it. Just because it can be fixed doesn’t mean it should be fixed. If you’re paying someone to tig it, could get costly. A post 08 RN pole bolts right up. Another plus is you’d be putting on at least a 14 year newer pole.

Well one way or another this pole has to come off. I've got it all disassembled but I can't figure out how to disconnect the start/stop wires. I can see down in the engine bay where they are fastened by a connector and some heat shrink. I can't get that connector apart no matter how hard I try. Does it have to be removed from the main electrical box? Do I have to cut the wires?20190922_105411.jpg

Idk if you have to tools to do it, but I'd cut those waterproof butt connectors off and crimp on a factory plug, in its place, JM sales them.

I dont know why you wouldnt convert to 96-07 pole.. your have to buy a new steering cable, but your gain a lot more steering throw.

Yeah it looks like I'm going to have to cut the other wires anyway. Might look into new plugs while I'm at it.

I didn't realize that the pre 08 poles had more steering throw. I did notice that on my stock FX1 steering plate the last hole for the steering cable attachment doesn't have threads tapped in it. I guess you aren't supposed to put the cable on the outermost hole for more steering authority?

The factory connectors suck. Total PITA to get apart. I’ll be replacing mine this winter with either deutsch (expensive but the best) or some amazon cheapies I’ve had good luck with.

I can unplug the stock connector with one hand, not sure what's difficult about it. Deutsch connectors are better, but when you go to replace the s/s switch, your have to cut it and change the plug. If you use dielectric grease on the stock plugs, your never have any issues.
