Buying Older Skis, need advice

Prices are beginning to ease. They spiked up during COVID. Be as patient as you can afford to be. Old Superjets are usually overpriced. That 90 model will need, at minimum, a 701 cyl and impeller to run about as good as a newer one. Its 34 year old crank is likely rusty, maybe not, stranger things have happened.
So do the cylinder, pistons, heads from a 701 swap directly onto the 650?

@KMN Thanks for that, yeah anything I get at this point whether it be a project that I build out and make nice again or a good running ski that I keep in good running condition I plan to keep for a very long time as well.

@Pro-pulsion that's good to know about the kawi and yamaha parts, I hadn't given that aspect much thought

Don't buy a "project" ski. Buy a ski which is nearly as stock as possible.

As @Big Kahuna says: "That SN is mint."

Quit dinking around and offer the seller $2800 for it especially with the stand and go get it.

@kevbo knows allot more than me, but the premix oil in that 650 has "fogged" the crank already and there should be no rust because quite friggin' clearly that ski has been stored indoors. And the original 1990's tray material is not even frickin' worn.

Dude, you are a fool not to scoop it up immediately, even at full price $3000.

I was looking for some cheaper skis when I came across this 90 superjet that looks to be in great condition and has been left totally oem/stock. Guy says has only had a carb rebuild and runs great. Wants $3k which seems like a lot for a 35 year old ski. Is that high or is that about what these things should be going for in decent condition?

Step 1, buy this ski. Step 2, find another. Avoid project skis for now, it wont be worth the headache. Finding parts for these SJ's is a walk in the park since they are so interchangeable and have been used on every yamaha ski forever. Step 3 Have fun!

The 701 intake setup is vastly superior to the one on a 650 , they look similar but perform QUITE differently , as Kevbo said the cases have to be enlarged to clear the sleeves on a 701 cylinder , my advice look for a Waverunner lll with a 701 61X in it , pull the 701 out and put it in the Superjet , put the 650 back in the Waverunner and sell it , in that ski it basically runs no different , Waverunner lll's are cheap and at the start of the season pretty they are easy to sell and get rid of.

I did a swap for a customer almost just like this a few years back ,only difference is it was a Waverunner VXR pro donor ski SKI which has way more Superjet compatible parts on it, jet pumps , intake grates , ride plates, midshafts and housings all the same as a SN Superjet . The driveshaft is a different length though .

Just run it as a 650 for now. The 650 is not anemic. I put a 701 from a Waverunner into a Square Nose and, yes, it is slightly more powerful and I am glad I did it. But the 650 was fine for starters.

You CANNOT compare a SN SJ 650 with a Kawasaki 550sx. The 650 SN SJ is much more ski. Even in stock form it has much more bottom end torque than a 550sx and the SN has a more refined hull and pump and steering design.

I did just pick up a 94 wave raider 701 for dirt cheap figuring I'd probably be able to put the 701 in it to good use at some point. I haven't looked into it at all yet but it does have an electrical issue, engine turns over with no spark. If I were to swap a 701 for a 650 would I need to swap all the electrical as well or do these work as just a straight engine swap? Also, I'm not totally clear on the differences between the 61x and 62t. My understanding is single carb vs dual carb and the 61x has better bottom end vs the 62t better top end performance, is that correct?

I'm with ya there, if I end up picking up that 650 SN and it runs good as is I'd probably want to just leave it stock at least for a good while

You need the 60T CDI to go with the 62t stator , the Superjet engine is pretty much a 62T twin carb engine with a 61X single carb top end on it .
