So buddy is buying a Yamaha Funjet. He says it has a "outboard" motor.

I disagree because there is no motor on the outside of ^^^ that.

He claims that because the motor is vertically oriented, like an outboard, that its called an outboard.

I need clarification. I need to be right. Help.

my thinking would be outside the hull...outboard. Inside the hull...inboard. Have a mix of both? Inboard Outboard! (I/O) lolol.

In alll of your mercury sport jet equipped jet boats the crankshaft is positioned vertically. I think it's mostly due to saving space and pump design.

Am I the only one who sees that on the left they are pointing at water cooling and on the right they're pointing at propulsion.... Who the hell made that graphic. They literally drew over the propeller and pointed at the IMpeller.

Graphic is correct. that is an outboard motor fitted with a lower jet unit.

A wetbike has a very similar engine setup, outboard style powerhead with jet pump, I think the old Sea Ray jetboats had Merc outboard powerheads as well.
