can a starter be removed without taking the motor out?

i need to rebuild and replace my starter and just wanted to know if anyone has ever removed it with the motor in the ski. im thinkin its possible but wanted to check.

Kawasaki 750 or 800 - no problem

Yup, absolutely. (With B-Pipe)

It's easiest if you take off the headpipe.
Remove the two starter bolts, pull the starter out.
Then unbolt the positive cable.

I have never pulled a motor to replace a starter...however most of my skis have had bpipes.

Even with the tiny 550 it is possible - just do it.. it goes..

It takes about 25 seconds to replace if you have a type 4 blue pipe. You don't even have to turn any screws, twist, pull and replace. MadMat can confirm this process. But, oh you don't like type 4 pipes so you're out of luck...ha ha JK, I couldn't resist
