Can they be made quieter?

that’s creative! Are there any issues doing this?

Yamaha did that on other skis so it will be fine. I am not sure how much quieter it will make it though. Best thing is run the stock RN water box and probably a sprayer in the exhaust line like the waveraiders.

Aftermarket hulls tend to be shorter, and length of exhaust pipe will slightly affect noise levels. I run a protec pipe with H2o waterbox and my superjet is still not very loud especially compared to my old 650sx's with front exhaust.

Group K have “sleeper” kits available for the Yamaha 701 platform that offer significant power increases whilst utilising the stock exhaust system. Have a look on their website and see if any set up is of interest to you.

The stock 701 exhaust has no tuning. They provide very linear power just not nearly as much as a tuned pipe. The good thing about a pipe is that you can run a very restrictive (quiet) muffler without reducing power. I experimented with small exhaust outlets, I got it so small that it whistled like a kettle before any top speed was lost. People perceive volume as power, plus they like attracting attention.

I think you can dry them out a bit for more power.

Thanks, I’m with you. Didnt realize how terrible the stock superjet manifold is for power. All those engineers creating something just to rob power/save cost. Oh well

appreciate everyone’s comments.

I remember a story one of my instructors told us when I was taking a powersports repair course...

Back in the 60's when PWC's were newly invented, an important figure (I think it was a mayor of a town) rode in to address a large group of people. The ski had been building fuel vapours under the hood and eventually the hot exhaust ignited it and the man was killed in front of all those people. After that, skis were gone for a bit. They didn't start building them again until the 70's.

Since then, one of the main focuses of the stock exhaust is to stay cool, hence the giant water jackets, and lack of power.

If you're really concerned, try making the extra muffler. Just a 6" one makes a noticeable difference, but bigger should be better. I've tried something like a resonator that didn't have packing, but didn't notice a difference. I think what I used for packing was that mesh lath that you put under plaster. The inner pipe was just PVC with tons of little holes drilled into it and the outer was larger PVC, with caps on the end that the inner pipe went through.
