can u just paint an aluminum handpole?

why are aluminum handpoles powdercoated? i just got a ski with one that has what seems like white primer on it and am thinking i could just spray it black and be done with it. the primer seems to be adhering pretty good. ???

Yes you can paint it sand lightly first

Because paint will scratch or chip when the pole gets knocked into and powdercoat won't

To do it right,you need a primer that etches into the aluminum.The paint will stay on this way.
