Carbon fiber parts turning milky white in water

Tried doing a search on this to no avail, someone else has to have had this problem.

I have Blowsion hull extensions on my pro. They're fiberglass with a top layer of carbon. Also have a RPot carbon plate for my pro. Both when in the water turn a milky white color. When they dry out the hull extensions look fine. The ride plate keeps getting worse. Its as if the resin is soluble to water.

Have you guys experienced this before? Can I brush on some better resin for a more durable top coat? I want to keep the carbon look, I just don't want them to look like junk in the water. And I'm worried my new hull extensions will deteriorate over time.

I know epoxy resin blushes like that.. Mine did that when I took the ski out for a ride before I turfed the tray. There were many places that the fresh glass and thickened epoxy blushed(turned white and milky)

Amine Blush should scrub off with a maroon scotch brite and soapy water. test on an area that is discreet.

I would consider clearing with a 2k(Eastwood or Spraymax) after cleaning off.

I think you may be right on that its Amine Blush. This sounds just like it.

I've heard of looking for non-blushing epoxies, but I didn't realize this was one unfortunate consequence. Looks like its a result of having a more rigid epoxy with a higher modulus of elasticity. I'll try removing it with a maroon scotchbrite and clearing it. I've got a few parts I can test on.

Some epoxies are UV protected...but most require a top coat to protect from UV degradation don't they? Would clear coat prevent the blushing you're experiencing?

When epoxyparts are not cured in oven you have uncured hardenerparts in your part. Uncured hardener sucks water and get a white surface. As longer the podlife as more you have this problem. With infusionresins(300min podlife) you can get this problem with high humidity...,,no watercontact needed for this

What about yellowing? And are there spray can clears that will protect the epoxy?

I had blowsion race carbon rideplate, it become white as well as u describe,.
What i do is i polish wth black shoe polish n all fine till now. Bought since end of 2010.

When it cameout off mould yellow/brown it is epoxy over polyestercelcoat layed. When it will by brown/yellow after time the epoxysurface os not UV protected. You can prevent it with car clearcoat

My friend who has CF body panels on his wrx just sent me a link for Krylon 1305, a UV resistant clear. It's $11.73 with free prime shipping so I just bought one. I will post up how well it works.

Sounds like if there's no visible blush then just spray and cover the remaining hardener, preventing water from reaching it.

It comes from the minerals in the water. If anyone has a fiber glass swimming pool it's most common in them from the minerals and different chemicals they put in. Take some acetone and it wipes right off like nothing was there.

I haven't tried it yet. I'll clean it with acetone, cover it with the clear, and report back.
