Here is a question...

In my fx-1 that just saw the water for the first time this weekend I have some carbon/kevlar layed in for reinforcement (ok, at least it looks pretty)..as it was NOT vaccuum bagged...I used a fresh batch of west systems and mixed as per the instructions..

after the first ride, it turned completely white! when I first saw it I tought it was covered in premix/water

I let it sit overnight and it went back to normal

WTF?

SAME THING HAPPENS TO the layer of carbon on the waterdawg rideplate..more so in fresh water than salt..ithink its mineral deposit or something

the carbon is probably getting wet then turns white on you.you might want to let it dry real good and put another layer of epoxy to seal it or clear it well and thick to waterproof it.a lot of ride plates and hull extensions do that after being immersed in water.sealing them usually does the job.

So are the CF parts that are sold to us PWC guys protected from the sun, or not?

Trinity parts are fine. The resin used is aerospace certified epoxy. Resin has great UV properties. Also parts are post cured to a higher temp than surface temps seen in direct sun. That makes the part stable. Gel sucks in the sun. Trust me. Started a boat company for a investor 4+ years ago. So I know a few things. Put alot of wax on a new gel product and that will help. Carbon finish parts that have polyester gel will break down in the sun. We do not use gel coat. I think it is trash. Its also very heavy, but it is cheap. The boat I'm talking about can be seen on myspace or Bimini Marine.com. That was a fun project. Started it from scratch at 23 and took 3 years of pluging, tooling and mold making. I made 2 prototypes. A center console 24 and a sport express 24. Built the first 3 boats then owner scewed me out of $14,000. I then split moved back to fl. and went back to Freedom Aviation. Just a short story of many in my life in composites. Bottom line gel coat is the cheapest surface used in production boats etc. I have cleared w/ sherwin williams 7000 I think, would have to look to be sure. Sprayed over alot of carbon including planes made of carbon. No problems over years of sitting in the sun. Its about the right product and application. Hope to have helped somebody.
