Carbon vs Fiberglass hull

I am looking into purchasing an aftermarket hull and just wondering if the extra 3 to 4 grand for carbon is worth it? I know you save weight with carbon but does that 30 lbs really make up for the extra price tag? I ride mostly flat water so I know the majority of you are going to say pony up and get carbon. Just trying to see how much difference there is. The 3 or 4 grand goes a long way on a bigger motor. Thanks in advance for the input

I would rather have a big motor vs carbon hull. 30lbs is a noticable difference. If 3-4 grand is nothing to you, i would go for it.

I think you better compare apples with apples and not apples with oranges.
Wich hulls are you looking at, and were are there a price diff on 4 grand from glass to carbon.
If you look at Hurricane, which offer some very good deals on glass hull, vacuum bagged. http://www.hurricanefreestyle.com/hurricane-13-14.html They "only" charge 1500 extra for carbon.
I think the extra price i fair enough, look at the price on sq meter glass, vs same tip sq carbon, the price is 10-15 times higher for carbon, than glass.
That being said, you can easy feel 20-30 pounds on a ski, need less engine power, less effort to throw the ski around. But as yami said, if you can drop the coin , do it :)

Wish I had that type of coin but I don't. Talking with freestyle factory glass chan is $3200 and he hasn't locked in on a price for carbon yet but is thinking in the $7000 range don't quote me on that because he hasn't built one yet and that number could go either way. From the responses so far seems like I need to keep saving and go all out

Couple guys on here have the same hull save for one is full carbon, the other carbon/glass. Their driveline setups are very, close to the same, really only difference in setups is one is 735 with 46's the other 753 with 49's. The guy with the carbon ski says he can tell an immediate difference in the way the hulls handle. Hope that helps.

Yeah $3200 is a really good deal kinda hard to pass up. I just don't want buy one then 6 months down the road wish I picked up a used superfreak or xscream hull

I have been very happy with a carbon superfreak with a 701 for surf and some flat. Would I like a big motor, eh, maybe if I rode 100% flat. I was very surprised how insane a 701 felt in a ski rtr 239#

How much do you weigh?

Losing 20lbs will also help you avoid injury and recover way faster if you do get hurt.

From what I have heard, fiberglass is stronger for surf. Carbon fiber is strong too, but stiffer and therefore breaks easier. Many pros run fiberglass since they need their skis to handle 20 foot drops. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm only 175lbs not very much fat on me. I'm really torn between light hull and smaller motor and little bit heavier hull with a bigger motor.

If you can test ride some hulls first and see what fits your riding style, that will treat you best. Everybody likes a different feel and handling characteristics.

Also, exactly what kind of riding do you want to do? That will help you figure out what hulls to consider. Not many hulls can chase a boat and cruise a lake and still be good at flatwater. Although having a knowledgeable person help you with your overall set up can help tremendously. Philip Clemons is amazing BTW.

Lots of guys can offer up opinions on hulls, but everybody has different riding styles and hull requirements.

I weigh 170 and love flatwater (I'd like surf more if it was closer) and have happily settled with a glass hurricane. It'll chase boats, do flat and I can't wait to get it in the surf. I'm not much of a cruiser though and like to ride a little aggressive. It will chase boats too. It fits my riding style, but might not fit yours.

When trying to get a feel for any hull, figure 8's will get you in touch real quick. Then start trying whatever tricks you are comfortable with after getting a feel.

95% of my time is spent on the river doing flat water. I have no desire to compete at any level, I just want to get out there and have fun. I'm looking for a hull that is kinda an all around hull doesn't have to be the best at any one thing but good at everything (if that's possible). From my experience riding a few different hulls it is really hard to get a good feel for a particular hull only having a short amount of time on it. With everyone setting their skis up differently the same hull can feel way different. I am looking for the most capable ski that I can grow with as a rider

Carbon has different properties than glass. There are different types of glass too. I'm not a composite expert by any means, but you can't just say one is stronger than the other. They both have different qualities. As mentioned above, a lot of guys that go big in surf prefer glass hulls. Ask around.

IMO carbon isn't worth it unless your being held back by 30lbs. It's just another thing people think they need. Don't get me wrong, pros benefit, but I don't think its gonna take another6 months or year to learn flips just cause you went glass.

Glass is also much more easily repaired.

Believe it or not carbon hulls get better gas mileage/ hrs, three of us noticed this right away with carbon SF's. Another small benefit imo is that a carbon hull in small surf don't hit bottom as easily on nose in flips or tail landings because of less weight. Loading up a carbon hull when you are exhausted is easier also the difference is noticeable when you lift both; these are small points but things you become aware of after ownership.

To me it sounds like a superfreak Titan would be a good hull for you

I thought my SF badass was a great all around hull that could do it all...carve turns, chase boats, freestyle tricks, etc

I am into fw freestyle so I went to the DVX
