Interested in getting a camera similar to a gopro but can't afford 200$+ for one. Are there any cheaper alternatives that still put out good quality videos?

Contour Roam. Version 1. Should be able to get one in the low $100s somewhere. Roam2s are $200. Nice thing is that they are waterproof as is. No case needed.

Phone in a waterproof bag as a helmet cam? Don't think that'd work so well. I should clarify that it'd be for my helmet and/or front of ski.

Why not get a previous version gopro, I haven't checked the prices but I assume they are cheaper.

ok, no helmet or rigid mount...but, don't limit yourself. Be inventive.....I can think of 10 ways to safely mount a bagged phone to my chest or shoulder. sorry, just trying to save you money

Well maybe I could work something out like that! I'd have to think about all the safe ways to do it. Not sure how good of vids my phone takes tho, unfortunately. I'll ponder that option :)

right , the res of your phone, but some of these smartphones are getting some decent res.

But hey, I'm the guy that will be using a 4' beanie boom, off my helmet. I take pride in my weirdness. lol

I'd look for a used gopro hero, or hd or something. Honestly my old one worked awesome, it just started glitching in the cold when skiing, or I'd never quit using it. Video quality is amazing and they just plain work. And they are easier to get them to work with software than the newer go pro's. I had to dummy my new one WAY down to get it to work.

The problem with using your phone is it is not impact resistant. There was a thread a while back on go-pro alternatives. One of them had a built in gps that would give you mph in the top corner. You should get that one. =)

What's your budget? I have a couple of the GoPro 960's that I purchased for a work project that only got used a couple times. They just sit on a shelf now and take up room.

I'll dig them up, see what they have for options and get back to you later. If I remember correctly, they each have a 32GB card and a spare battery.

This is what I got?

EDIT: Had! Both of these have since been sold!
