I'm looking to get a 2012/2013 chevrolet 1500 4x4 for my girlfriend to commute in and to take on longer jet ski based road trips (surf slam,Daytona...etc). I have a 2500 for heavier towing already so not interested in going up the line for a 3/4-1 ton.

Looking for input from any current owners of this make/model truck. Anything to watch out for/avoid? Also, recommendations on crew cab (shorter bed) vs ext cab (standard bed)?

All feedback is welcome.

Iam sure this isn't what you meant but thought I'd mention, my co-worker got another brand ext cab then got his girlfriend pregnant and now wishes he'd got the crew cab, with a baby seat in backwards the front passenger seat has to be all the way forward. Even a short 5.5 foot person is squished up their.

Will you be using a hitch hauler or trailer? I have a short bed and a standard length Sj the tailgate has to be down. I believe you can close it on the standard bed. Hitch hauler solved that issue for me if it is for longer hauls with the tailgate up

I can fit in the back of an ex cab chevy reasonably comfortably and I'm 6'2". They make a 4 door ex cab now too

I have a 2007 5.3 2wd LTZ. I bought it used from Maher Chevy in 2010 with 33k on it.

My dash cracked, replaced under the $500 appearance protection package.

The paint pealed off my door handles, steering wheel (not the wheel but the center part between the wheel and the horn), my exterior door handles, and my bose stereo. The door handles were repainted at purchse. The bose and steering wheel pealed about a year later. The steering wheel was a non-issue, but having the bose deck replaced was like pulling teeth. My parents know the wigs at the dealer so it finally got taken care of.

My slip yoke started clunking in my drive shaft about 1 year after I got it. Felt like a had a lawn mower rolling back and forth in the bed. Covered under the extended warranty I bought, but they serviced it 3-4 times and replaced it twice.

As for Ext cab vs Crew cab...

The ext is 6.5' STD bed and the crew is short 5.75' bed. I don't know how someone said they got a superjet in the short bed with the tailgate up, because I have the 6.5' STD bed, and to close my tailgate, I have to turn my superjet at an angle (back to front left corner and front to back right corner), then turn it on it's side and close the bed. Same with my X2, it's not a super tight fit, but very little room.

I went with the shorter cab, longer bed, for a number of reasons. The main one was price. The crew with 4x4 would have been nice, but I chose the LTZ model over the base so I had to save the money somewhere. Time machine available, I would have probably preferred the base model with crew and 4x4. I do like the leather as my truck sees some abuse and I would destroy cloth. The leather is the only reason I have the LTZ model. Next time I will probably get the base model and swap the seats.

I am sure when kids come along, I will wish I had the crew. That will only be a concern with car seats (my brother faired okay with his), and who knows how long I will have the truck (forever if it's cheaper than replacing it, gets the job done). My wife's next vehicle will be a cross over, so I am sure it will be able to tow the skis.

go crew cab.
i wish i did. its fine for just me, but when load up for long trips, its really nice to have that extra 6" of cab space for people or gear.
rear facing kids seat in the back makes it tight up front as the seat needs to be almost all the way forward. not as bad when you have a forward facing seat.

truck has been great. i got the 5.3 with the 6 speed tranny. not the best commuter but i dont regret buying it. get 13-15 city and 18ish highway. as said already change the fluids an your good

I had a 04 Silverado ss which was extend cab and only sold it because I need more room with my daughters baby seat. Truck ran and drove great and had 170k on it when I sold it. Bought a 2010 GMC Denali 6.2 crew cab. It is nice with more room now that we have 2 kids but I liked the ss better. This truck has had some problems and only has 68k on it now, I plan to dump it in the next year or 2.

I had an Avalanche that I loved. But it ate up front and rear hubs........ by the time it hit 100,000 miles it needed some work done to it. Enough so that it was cheaper to trade it in. My Nissan Titan Crew Cab has one payment left and will turn over 100,000 miles today. Other than having an issue with front brake rotors. I have not had any issues with it other than a crack in the exhaust manifold that ended up having the entire exhaust system replaced under emissions warranty. Gas mileage sucks but this has been the most reliable truck I have owned.

ever seen an ext cab in a rollover? that is the main reason i will never go with a suicide door ext cab. i just upgraded from a f250 ext cab to an f350 crew. i used to fit 2 audaults and my 8 year old semi comfortably. now i can sit 6 adults comfortably.

Jebus your truck does better hauling then my v6 Xterra does just driving...I'm lucky to get 15 mpg on the highway.

What surprises me is I'm always doing about 75.. and I have the small V8. (4.8l) . Alls I've done to the truck is exhaust and a intake. I noticed a big difference
