Chevy 1500 ext cab vs crew cab

15mpg... thats sad. my f350 gets 20 with the 35 ft trailer and 2 lifte jeeps and 2 skis in the bed..... i the dodge dart we are in right now with a waverunner3 and my 750sx and 3 people 3 full 10 gallon bins and a full car. oh and both skis are full of fuel. and we still average 25mpg over 800 miles......

It is sad and I love my xterra but the mileage sucks. I am thinking about getting an F-150 extended cab with the 5.5 bed. I have no use for a full size bed and parking is a pain in a full size truck so I figure a foot out of the frame would be a good compromise.

Sorry to thread jack...back to the topic at hand.

My 2007 5.3 xlt extended gets 17 highway, 14-15 city. I frequently idle for loading and such so I'm getting 12.7 avg now. Towing my 8.5x18 loaded about 4-5k lbs i get about 10.5 interstate, and that's in Florida.

Id love to have a f250 4x4 crew long bed diesel. Won't happen, but that's what I wish I had.

Im the original owner on a 2008 ext cab LTZ 1500. Currently it has 187k miles on it, and (knock on wood) doesn't drip a drop of any fluids and runs just as good as the day I bought it. I've driven it on several long road trips with three adults, it would of been nice to have a crew cab - but the ext cab did work just fine - plus it was nice to have the bigger bed space. I could definitly see how a crew cab would be best in a family/baby situation. I will probably look at that next.

Truck still has the original ball joints and I have (again knock on wood) never done any major repairs to it. I am very meticulous on replacing all fluids on schedule (diff, trans, engine, etc) and it has treated me well. As mentioned earlier in this thread, the paint does seem very "thin" on these trucks and does chip/scratch easily. I have actually had the truck repainted twice - the first time was because it was "sandblasted" in a windstorm and all the paint chipped off and the second time was when a lady backed into the back end of the bed. Now the paint seems to hold up better - as its on so thick :). I head that all newer verticals have issues with paint because they are a different chemical makeup for EPA friendliness and everyone is trying to make them lighter for MPG's.

I would not buy a pre 2014 Silverado at this point, with the new body style I think you will notice a bigger drop in value as they become less desirable. I would save up for a 2014+.

Another consideration is the new Chevy Colorado/Canyons. The new GMC's look awesome, a crew cab could fit all your people and pull a ski trailer easily. Plus it will get much better MPG's then any full size - also I think the price will be under 30k for a fully loaded truck. I also heard that they are planning on a duramax version which would be sweet!

I looked at the above pic and thought it was a full size...but didnt have the door handles in the rear. The new Chevy/GMCs are a far step forward from previous years in terms of looks.

the colorados are nice but they really dont get that much better milage than a full sized truck. that and the price isnt that far off from a full sized either.

so you pay a little less, get marginally better fuel economy and only drive a 1/4 ton truck.

The search ends. I couldn't find a 1500 I liked so I picked up a 4x4 '09 2500 Gmc sierra slt 29000 miles 6.0 liter gas engine.

Nice choice! one hassle of an extended cab is if you have a small garage or are in a tight parking spot a lot of times you cant swing the front door out far enough to get the back door open.

good choice on the 6.0, I was going to mention nearly every 2007-2010 5.3 will encounter some type of AFM issue. I have a 2008 LTZ Suburban 5.3(LC9). With 170,000 miles, it burns about 1 qt every 2000 miles. Acceptable by GM terms...

I got 21.4 MPG towing my SXR on the way to the TCJP Sortie. I took two lane highway and never exceeded 65 MPH. Must be that Summer Gas!

I just bought an 11 silverado crew LT w/ 5.3 6spd auto and happens to have leather. That was close to a $1k package new. I first looked at the ext cabs but quickly found the suicide doors to be a pita, especially with a 10 year old and friends always in tow. I made a 400 mi round trip this past weekend and it was great. No regrets so far!
