Chipped pump vein/Vibration

1) One of the veins on my superjet pump has a pretty decent sized chunk out of it. How does this affect performance?

2) When my ski is running in the water, I hear a distinct noise, really don't know how to describe it. But it comes from the middle or rear of the ski I am pretty sure. Sort of like a vibration of water noise/sloshy sound. When do you know when your pump is due for new bearings/seals?

take the pump out and spin it by hand, does it feel smooth or rough? You can clean up the pump veins with a dremel.

No this chip is like 1/2" deep, not just little chips i can smooth out

Also the stock bearings are I believe a 6 ball configuration, they will generate that noise, more so as they wear and become due for replacement. I just rebuilt my pump a couple of months ago using a JetManiac kit, the bearings in his kit are at least a 10 or 12 ball design, possibly more, and there is a very different drive line sound.

Edit: I wouldn't be too worried about that size of chip, you can still dremel the rough edge and contour it reasonably well, then sharpen it and it should be fine. If this kind of damage was on all the veins then I would say consider a replacement pump, but for only one...do the best you can to clean it up and contour it. If it really bothers you, remove it and have a welder do a fill weld and finish it with the dremel. If you choose the welding route, just remember that cast aluminum, especially that of a pump that has seen dirty water, will be quite a challenge to weld and get to accept new filler. They are very porous and anodized...makes clean aluminum not want to stick to it. I just went through the pump welding phase about a month ago. The best we could get it to take was aluminum MIG weld, it didn't like TIG at all.

I've repaired pump vanes with my Tig. Newer, cleaner pump are obviously easier to work with...

Chips won't affect performance, huge NICs that force the water to abruptly change flow are not good. But a small nic out of the stator veins will not make a noticeable difference if you fix it.

The whurring sound you describe sounds like bearings on the out. X2 on the Jetmaniac pump rebuild kits. I used the hot cold install method described for doing the Solas mag.
