Super Jet choosing new ski

Sup guys. My last ski was an 89 650sx and now i'm looking to upgrade. I found a 98 sxi pro for a good deal but everyone is saying to stick to a superjet. I would be doing more freestyle and less carving. I found a 1990 square nose superjet with a bunch of mods. "Some of mods ADA racing cylinder heads dual 38 mm carbs riva racing intake 701big bore kit, MSD ignition, after market pipe, racing out put shaft, wisco pistons, reinforced hull and aluminum poll"

Thoughts on this? Think it'll have enough power? The 650 lacked power for me.

Stand up's rarely come up for sale in my area and when they do they are usually high priced newer superjets, which I cant afford.

Maybe I'll get it all the way around NEXT time....

Yeah, start with a SN or RN if it is in your budget. The SXI pro was built for carving / racing. I don't personally like the SN, RN's just feel lighter / more nimble. I love the feel of the FX1. If you are planning on building an AM hull someday, you will want to start out with Yamaha engines anyway.

So you think that engine is good to go? Think it has good enough power to have fun on? My old 650sx was a dog IMO and I don't want to buy this unless its a nice upgrade.

Oh and by freestyle I mean just tossing it around on the lake. No surf just average stuff.

650 w/ a pipe and some compression is a pretty fun boat. Not going to be backflipping or anything, but nice and tossable with the right pump / prop setup.

I had an SXI a few years ago and it was fun for tooling around on the lake but it slides out alot and didnt have much low end power. Definitely felt more like a racing ski. I got an 08 RN and its a world of difference. For basic flatwater tricks a suprejet is the way to go. Ive ridden SN jets as well and the RN is more agile and more comfortable to me but whatever is in your budget. In the process of installing footholds now so itll be like a new ski to me this year. A yamaha 701 has plenty of power stock and there are a ton of upgrade options for the future.

Well you can always put a 701 in it ifs in not powerful enough. You can get a running 61x 701 for under $500. But Like you said, Decent priced SJs do not come up for sale very often in our area so just buy whatever sj you can find or afford and upgrade from there.

The difference between a sj650 and a kawi 650 is the low end thrust. The superjet hull is 4,000 times better too. If you can't afford a newer one you don't really have a lot of options.

The thing is, in my area stand ups barely ever come up for sale. I've found two and they are still a few hours drive. Its either old ski's like the square nose or 650sx's or brand new sj's. Middle years(00-05) are rare. Any ideas on places to look?

Here on the x, pwctoday, and craigslist man.

Search "yamaha superjet site:craigslist.org" and it will search the entire united states. Superjets go fast. Have the cash ready and be ready to pounce.

And what's wrong with a square? You said you don't have the money for a newer superjet. Your options are very limited

Go with the superjet, the sn is a really good ski for tricks and lake play. Plus in the future you can mod it to where you want to go, the kawi is going to be limited.

I got a 61x motor on my shelf if you buy the 650 I can sell you. Not sure where you are in GA but Dustin, myself and others ride Allatoona pretty frequently. We have various rides and mods so you can feel the power difference. We'll have some aftermarket rides here shortly as well too.

I have had to drive out of state twice for skis. They really just don't come up very often in our area and AHEM DUSTIN buys them all up LOL. He's got like instant messaging to his phone every time the word superjet or stand up is put on craiglist or something. Look in Alabama, Tennessee and SC for some as well and try to get a freshwater one if you buy used or take Dustin up on a ski. he goes through them with a fine tooth comb.
