Coil “problem”

So I’m having a weird issue that isn’t really an issue since it runs fine on the water. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen because I haven’t. Ski runs fine in the water no issues. But when I rev it up out of the water to clear out the waterbox it breaks up/misfires at high rpm. I’ve narrowed it down to what I believe is the jss coil. I have redone the ends but I soldered new ones on so should be good as new. Really doesn’t make any sense. Usually when it’s a spark problem it runs fine out of the water but shows up under a load. Anyone had that happen before?

At first I thought it was my modded stock Cdi..I switched coils and put in riva adjustable rev limiter cdi at same time. Went away so I thought it was cdi that fixed it. Swapped the jss coil back in and siliconed up the ebox and it came back. Has to be the coil. Just doesn’t make sense.

Yeah that’s a bit odd... was thinking about the primary side of the coil... we always see issues on the secondary side as you’ve mentioned already...

Another member I was talking to was having a backfire type issue above idle only... on the stand.. hasn’t water tested though.. anyways after swapping the intire ignition system out in 1 shot, the issue went away.. so he started swapping back in 1 part at a time to try and isolate it... well after all the parts were back in the issue was still gone....

That was me and thanks @Harbor.
It was really frustrating to not find the issue. I really wish something would have been bad to at least have an answer.

OE Yamaha coils suck. Yes, I have had similar problems to what you are having.

EDIT - want to add, do NOT switch to an MSD coil either. We have had issues with these as well.....

I tried three different OEM coils, one was from a flawless running ski and it didn’t fix the backfire. Then like I said when going all back to all the original parts that backfired everything was fine. So at least on mine who knows.

I had an issue like this but mine broke up on the water. It ended up being a bad stator. I tested the stator it tested fine cold with an ohm meter but the minute it gets hot it breaks up. I tested it hot 1 coil on stator was out of range. I replaced the coil on the stator problems solved. Are you sure your not hitting the limiter?

Not sure if you saw my last post..Yea definite difference when it’s been out of the water for a few days and when I just took it out. Also rev’d normally with different coil.

Like others have stated, definitely check the stator.
the stock SJ coil in a salt water environment has a limited lifespan. For years, I have been specifying using a GP760 coil on performance surf skiis. The difference is the wires. The stock coil uses copper core wire, which is subject to breaking and corrosion. The 760 coil uses filament leads, that are factory assembled. And highly resilient to the salt water abuse.
Most of the new stock of these is gone now from Yamaha. But they can be found used. I have been using there with Zeel setups and having good luck there also. Give that a try
