Surfriding Cold Water Gear for the Ocean - Suit - Gloves - Boot - Hood - my observations so far

CurbYourHo you guys been out in 2013 yet? We are shooting for next weekend in NH.

Skirunner - Love Ricky!

Unfortunately no, I haven't been out since September and wont return until probably March. I had a broken clavicle and hand on my motorcycle so I really shouldnt go riding as of now. Otherwise I probably would go for a ride.

Boots - I run the Jettribe RS-15 Race boots in the summer. They have worked very well with two exceptions. First they wear out at about 40 hours. The outer materials just break down. Second the foam on the insoles broke down from jumping. The heels ground holes into the foam and that is no good. I'm looking for alternatives for 2013 as I think the zipper in the front may hurt my foot in the footholds this year.

I looked at all the options and tried the surf boots from the same company as my drysuit ION. The boots fit great - were warm but they were too loose feeling for me. Second they do not have the padding on the sole and the upper that I prefer for riding surf. I think most surf boots are going to be the same feeling thin b/c that is what surf guys want. Also in the cold they are a biach to get off your feet.

Next I investigated ocean sailing boots - I went for the ZHIK boots - they looked promising - lace up side and Velcro ankle support and good rubber where you want it. Problem ws they did not fit right and the lace up system was just too bulky and inefficient for skiing. i could see them coming loose all the time.

So what I am rising with are Excel diving boots - they are super warm and have a side zipper so they are easy to get on or off.

The only downside i have seen is they are not super durable - the neoprene has gotten a few nicks in it from riding - no big deal I just seal them up with Neores a GREAT product.

I am using the Jettribe lycra socks to cover the boot zippers so they do not cut into the seals on the drysuit.

Hood - I run the drysuit so I want a very light hood for the coldest days. I went for the NSR Mystery hood - it is titanium lined so it reflects heat back to your body.

Goggles - I wore goggles a lot on my SXR - it would sub so much and I got a lot of salt water in my eyes. I found the Oakleys are best but you are often ging to have fogging and you better run some sort of saftey strap to keep from loosing them. Not so bad in calm water as they float but it bites in big waves. They are relatively cheap too.

On the 04 Superjet it is a real nose high boat. So I found I ride without goggles.

Master is that what you run? I'm liking the neoprene extra warmth vs the bag suit. Plus I'm just not sure it would breath out all the moisture from inside. What is your experience with them?

yes,and it will let out ALL moisture, its unreal really..good base layer of 200 polartec is great,They use a spray skirt that keeps it tight at the waist so it doesnt feel like a loose bag. Its super easy to take off and on,has gore tex socks built in,thin smartwool socks as a base layer also has a pisser zipper that comes in really handy..I use hand warmers in the grips like special fx,with reg riding gloves in water temps over 45, then switch to thin 1.5 mill gloves in colder water just in case....

Its really nice to get back to the ramp and pull it off super fast and have totally dry clothes on that are already all warmed up to load up at the ramp while you watch everyone else shiver and freeze with the slightest breeze...lol

That is fantastic that the kayak suit works for you. What about standing up - is it uncomfortable at all b/c it is cut to be worn sitting down? I must sweat a lot more b/c I have never found using any of the breathable fabrics (for other activities I have high end gore tex suits) that really get all the sweat out. Are you riding lake or ocean (surf)?

Suits for under the drysuit - you have to have underwear in the dry suit for warmth since it does not work like a wet suit. For the lightest clothes / warmer weather I use light EMS underwear - techwik - it wicks the moisture away from your skin.

Next I got a Hyperflex poly suit - it is really warm but too thin for really cold days

The suit I have been wearing most is the Immersion Research Union suit - it is a thicker polar fleece type suit and really comfortable - there are no zippers - you just get in from the neck of the suit - it is a super stretchy neoprene
