I have a Liquid Force Cardigan, its a slip over non-cga but extremely light and when you wear it it feels like you don't even have anything on.

Ive been looking at getting this one. Here in TX you have to have a CGA vest so...

Well you technically have to have a CGA vest on in every state but some places enforce it more than others. I have been looking at these things because I've broken ribs waterskiing before and if I can get a vest that will help prevent that, it sure would be nice. I've also seen a couple vests with lumbar support as well...might be kinda cool.
I've never had a vest checked in KY, but I got plucked out of the water in Panama City to check for a CGA stamp. I had a tour coat over it, so he stopped me to see if I had one on. When I showed there was a vest underneath, he then had me climb up the side of his boat with no ladder, get on board, take off the coat and vest, and show him the approval. PITA. Would have been worse had it not been a CGA vest though.

Doesn't look like you can get jobe stuff in the USA.
This is why I would never wear one of those vests that look like collared shirts. Inevitably, someone will pull you over because it looks like you're not wearing a vest. Once they do, they've already got you there so they're going to ask to see it. Then when they can't find a CGA tag, you're done for. I've been wearing my Lotus Designs vest for 13 years and the stitching on the CGA tag came undone after only 6 months. No one has ever checked that vest in all those years and I used to work on the water from sun up to sun down for the first 6 of those summers.

What happens if you get caught with a non-cga vest?

At the worst- You probably get a fine, and are asked to get out off the water until you get a CGA approved vest. Or you might get off with a warning?
