The riders are doing what sells, thats true. Its also what the people want to see and what wins. Hood tricks wont cut it in pro freestyle anymore. Its go big or go home.
I've been pulling out my old videos from the past lately, and while its true there was more tricks pulled in a routine back then, but the big tricks won then too. Other tricks were just "filler". Stabs were the big trick then, and they would pull 3 or 4 in a routine easily. They just had different variations on them, Same as today.
Non of the runs seemed repetitive to me. They just take out the filler, and give people what they really want to see, and what will give them a chance to win.
Freestyle has always been a sickest trick competition. Just a 2 minute version of it. Nothing at the WF comes close to freestyle. Its standing room only, the crowd goes crazy, and the cameras are all working overtime. You have to be there to really get it. No one walked way from freestyle on Havasu saying, too repetitive, or not enough hood tricks, just amazed at what these guys can do. Even the freeriders there... Kenney, Curtis, Serlin and Jerry all said "that sh*t was sick!"
