consolidating forums and using prefixes instead---thoughts?

There are thread prefixes, like in the classified section you can append For Sale or WTB on the beginning of your thread title, and you must select one in those forums.

I'm considering consolidating a ton of forums and adding more prefixes and making them mandatory, especially with the individual ski forums. So, instead of posting in the Super Jet forum, you'd post in the Ski forum and select Super Jet as the prefix. The prefixes show up everywhere and you can search based on them as well. I think it would cut down on the clutter and mess of having way too many forums.

sounds like a great idea but the prefixes must be mandatory for it to work. Can't skip that part.

I love the idea, in fact, I've thought the forum was divided up too much already.

I really don't see the point. If anything I think this site is divided up too much already. Do we really need a Driveline section? That stuff can either go in General or by specific ski.

And the Ski area seems very redundant. Unless only generic (not model specific) questions are the only ones allowed in General, we don't need to break it down that far. I mean there is more Super Jet tech in the General section than there is in the Super Jet section. Keep custom hulled skis in the General section because most of them can/will be made to accept any driveline configuration you want.

That's not even close, there is Downhill, All Mountain, Cross Country, Jump/Park, and probably another classification or two that I forgot.

can it be made such that you click on oh say the biking forum and once inside above all the combined posts there is a drop down box to select only specific prefixes? bonus if when browsing that prefix the prefixes do not show up in the title of the thread.

I went ahead and did it, tons of database queries and double checks later, and everything looked good, and now it appears a bunch of the prefixes disappeared off their threads. GRR.

Anyway, some of them are there, and it's required to select a prefix in the Skis forum so from here on out it will get better. You can also click on a prefix to only show that prefix, then click it again to show all threads.

So any post older than today has no prefix and therefore doesn't show up when a filtered display option is selected (at bottom of forum page)? Or am I doing this wrong??

I'll spell it out: I ran some queries on the database to put the appropriate prefix on all threads in the individual ski forums (super jet on the super jet forum threads, etc), double checked to make sure that worked then moved all of those threads into the Skis forum, then deleted the old forums once they were empty. Everything looked great, then I ran my counter update tools to rebuild thread/forum info and it looks like several prefixes are gone from their threads.

I'm sure me, Kahuna, Matt, Penguin can add prefixes here/there but most a lot of them aren't there.
