hating on the idea to carbon copy a hull that was a fail. yep, guilty. apparently the diploma on the wall didn't come with any practical knowledge. If waternut is going to spend the time and a decent investment on making a mold, then do you think the stunt hull is the best to start with for the plug? Okay maybe i am waaaaay off here but starting with a superjet hull that has no fitment issues would be a better idea, then take what ever options one likes about these new hulls and apply that to the hull and make it his own. he will never sell a carbon copy of a stunt hull and do we really want to see someone buy one from an amature hull builder? someone needs to be the hater on this so the idea never goes to production. save this guy some money people and from loosing friends if he decided to try and sell this crap.

Carbon will be the biggest cost, top quality stuff is awfully expensive and wont have much advantage when used with industrial resin and where load is mostly in bending. I once found a good deal on some culled IM6 from an aerospace supplier. Your engineering background will be useful once you carefully measure and test your current hull. If you want to make a very lite hull think about removing some lateral grip, it will make it easier to ride. Lighter hulls are always more difficult to ride in rough water when you get tired. A Rickter for example slides a lot easier than a Superjet. Standups are like beer in that there is little objectivity. Think about what you really need and work toward that end. Even the famed Superfreak is a horrible hull in some conditions.

I've built my own molds, and built carbon hulls. Save yourself the labor and headache. Buy a BOB for what you'd spend to build your own. Here's something to ponder. From starting the molds to riding, we estimated 1000hrs of work for 2 people.

chop. light short hulls are not great in choppy conditions. run it around a race course with 10 other skis and see how it does.

you're an engineer, price it yourself.

cy of cloth * # of layers * (expected waste % + 100) * cost of carbon cloth
once you know the amount of carbon you can figure the amount of resin.

similar equation for molds but double the layers and lower the cost of the cloth

plus materials

it won't be cheap.

Done. Thanks!

For the record The question was simple ........ " What would be the estimated cost of building a mold / hull " .

Simply put , Nut likes his re engineered stunt hull and he would like another one in a lighter form . Whats wrong with that ? Some people like the color red some like blue you say potato I say potato . If this is what the man wants he will have to build it ......... so everyone shut up about labor , hull reviews , and the worthiness of the project . Focus on the initial question ... COST . I'm glad no one told Berky , Steve , Eric Malone , Rick Roy , Warmer , Blowsin etc that they were crazy for attempting to build something . If you want to comment about any thing other than COST then start a new post of your own or refrain from posting ... my 2 cents.

resin to cloth ratio chart.jpg
Some rough calculations.....for a 50lb. project.

50/50 resin to cloth ratio (hand laid), That means 25 pounds is resin and the other 25 pounds is cloth.

Resin weight approx 8.75 lbs/ gal ($43.00/ gal- US composites) 3 gallons= $129.00

8.3 oz carbon, 1 lb = 1.928 yards. 48.2 yards=25 lbs. @ $41.50/ yard = $2000.30

$2129.30 for basic material.

What ever happened to letting people do what they want without bashing. Nut actually likes his modified Grunt Hull. He is happy with it. But some assholes always seem to feel they have to come out and impose their unwanted opinions about something that does not concern them. Does not effect them. Is no business to them. Grow up, learn to respect others or get the hell off this website. This is pathetic...............

Rant Over.
