Super Jet Coupler removal

I'm taking the coupler off my 6m6 motor to swap it out with a Kawasaki coupler because the 650 is going in my kawi 550 hull.... :). Is the coupler a right hand thread? Lefty loosey, righty tighty?

I was planning on using the rope in the cylinder trick to remove it unless anyone has a better method???

I'm not sure but I'd really like to see pics of that build i want to see how that motor fits. I'm going to pull my 650 this winter. I'm building a 701 And wouldn't mind doing a 550 hull with a super jet pump and motor.

Don't do the rope trick. You can bend a crank rod that way or cause other damage.

You need to lock the flywheel.

So what is wrong with the rope in the cylinder trick? I have used it multiple times without any damage to an engine. Every engine I have running currently I have used this trick and there are still going very strong. I'd agree if you can afford it go after that tool, but it's not completely necessary.

A couple good rules of thumb I have used on this is you need to feed the rope into the cylinder closest to the coupler. Rotate the crankshaft so that cylinder is on the up stroke. The top of the piston needs to be above the exhaust port. Make sure your engine is anchored to something. I drilled holes into my work bench and use long bolts to anchor the engine to the work bench. Use nylon rope so no particles or strands of the rope end up in the engine.

He is most likely documenting as he goes, and is going to make a pretty detailed thread about it when he is close or finished with the build. Just judging from his 550, 650sx, and SN SJ builds.

You bet ... I plan to document the build. I just finished my SN 701 build... Now time to turn my attention to the 550sx.

There is a tool that slides in like a coupler that has a 3/8 or 1/2 inch ratchet fitting. Believe its the yamaha tool. Heat up the coupler and hit it with a deadblow. Done this on all my motors.

Got the coupler off. First I soaked it in DuPont penetrating oil.

After considering my options I thought I'd try the dead blow with a hammer since it don't intend to use the coupler again.

A couple of sharp whacks with the hammer and off it came.... I'm surprised since this motor was run in salt water before I got it.
