I use a chain wrench to turn the coupler and I hold the mid shaft in position with an old driveshaft that I lock down in my press......leaves a few grip marks on the outer shell of the coupler, but its better than breaking it......heat helps
i have a old shaft tha t i welded a nut to so i can hold in a vise
then i just use a big breaker bar and angle it between the ears and unscrew it
heat does help

All of the above, plus apply a little heat before wrenching on it.... Safe way if unsure how much.... Sit it in some hot water (like just boiled 2 mins ago) for a few mins to let it heat up.
