The crank case has 5 dowel pins to hold the crank. I have a set of cases and the dowel pin that is closest to the flywheel does not stick up past the hole. it is a little below with the cases where the bearing rides. It is not suppose to be like that is it? does anyone have an extra one they want to sell....I wanted to have these cases built this week:banghead:

i had a similar probem I think, are you trying this with new crank seals, because mine were limiting the cases from going together correctly, finally I lined it all up and tightened the bolts.

I havent tried putting the cases together yet, but just inspecting them, the dowel pin is level with the surface of the bearing race , therefore it wont hold the bearing. And like always when building engines, brandnew OEM seals will be used

It would have pushed into the cases if the bearing wasn't aligned properly.

You can't get them out manually (without making a mess) but a machine shop with an electrode thingamy (technical term) can set it up and zap it out for you. It takes about 10 minutes. Once it's out, you can use the needles off a top end bearing or the like. Make it a nice tight fit and use some epoxy/jb weld to hold it in place.

If it has recessed in, chances are you have a small hole on the inner side of the flywheel area where the pin has pushed through. Make sure you fill it with some JB Weld.

See if you can find a machine shop that has a small high precision drill chuck, or a pin vise You could pay them to use for a few minutes (you could buy one too.) With this you can grab the top of the pin & rotate it while pulling up, working the pin out.

Its not worth the time or $$ to get it out...here's why, the main bearings ARE NOT held in place with a little stupid pin! Main bearing are held in place with BEARING CRUSH (interference fit/bearing bore smaller than the OD of the bearing) All the pin does is locate the bearing so your lubrication hole in the bearing matches the case hole. At this point you need to make sure that this front bearing WAS NOT the bearing that pushed it in when it was assembled wrong in the first place, if so use a new one. Just use a marker to mark proper placement (oil hole lined up with case) and use no more than a few drops of green locktite on the bearing just prior to assembly and you'll be fine and have no longterm problems!
