I've been reading up and its hard to tell who's in business still and what the preferences are.

Looking for a stock stroke crank for a higher end motor - What would you buy?
or
If your looking for a stroker, say 4 or 5mm - What would you buy?

Thanks!

Have heard from multiple builders that WSM cranks now come with Japanese bearings, including their rebuild kits. My hot rods crank I got for my SS build has koyo bearings actually. I went to buy a WSM but they were sold out everywhere, at least a few months ago. A rebuild from crankworks is expensive(new oem is like under 200 more) , more than new WSM or new hot rods but I haven't heard anything bad from them, ever.
I have heard from more than just the posts on this forum but from two builders directly who like competitive for rebuilds but put an Oem bearing on the rear due to ADRs rear bearings being hit and miss.
Now that adr is gone you have limited options with strokers.. Crankworks is around 1600/crank.
PHPs 4mil is much less than that, 1000$ range or so? Light weight and has excellent reliability. Have people around here getting multiple seasons between rebuilds. I just bought an 898 that had 3-4 seasons on that injested and ran lots of water through it to the point the rear piston crumbled and aluminum mush was going through the rear bearings. Front bearing still spins perfectly, lab seal still snug in the center with smooth bearings , rear bearing spins a little rough but no play.. no catastrophic failures considering!! WSM bearings(apparently nachi) and wsm sourced rods. This is on a race gas, dry piped freestyle ski.
I had a ported 701 with no water run through it or catastrophic failures have the rear bearing of an sbt crank blow the cage and take out a top end in under 2 seasons for reference.
They make a 10mil version as well.

I've had really good luck with SBT cranks from Jetmaniac. I bent a rod and had one replaced in 2011 no questions ask. Ran it in my flatwater ski and now my fx1. It's been in the ocean more times than I can count. Last year I built a ss900. I did my research and found accounts of failures from all the manufacturers. I'm sure not all were the crank builders fault but I concluded that you can get a good or bad crank from anyone in the business. I settled on another SBT. With the money saved I bought measuring tools to check them out myself. New OEM trued and welded is no doubt best.

I’ve got a used sbt I’m saving for jetmaniac credit. Came out a running engine.

The last hotrods crank I removed had Hotrods and China stamped on the bearings. Yeeehaw!

Koyo, Nachi, fag, snk... basically most Japanese made should be the best options. I’m guessing most oems use Koyo based on what I see on partzilla.

There’s been some counterfeiting rings from China on Japanese bearings so no one brand seems 100% safe anymore. Unless you know the source of the bearing is from hopefully a reputable seller, and not say; SNK bearings fs by some China ebay seller. Ymmv

Oh and I’ve blown the rears of 2x oem 6m6 cranks, though one was an original from 1996, and the other was out of an unknown 650. Both were likely 15-20 years old though, and the 650 one was definitely due to a carb overdue for rebuild. Oem is strong.

Crazy. I throw sbt cranks straight in the trash. Seen multiple engines ruin seasons. and trips to freerides. Absolute garbage.

Maybe some people only ride 30-40 hours a season. I wouldnt put a brand new sbt crank in a used 650. I have 2 sitting on a shelf if anyone wants them they can cover shipping and a 12pk for me going to the post office

How do you throw them straight in the trash but also have them on the shelf? Jetmaniac will give you $30 each for those. If a crank is gonna go it'll usually happen quick. Makes no difference how often you ride. Probably easier on a crank if ridden often as opposed to intermittent.

Shipping is the issue. Here in Cali it is more expensive to ship a crank to JM than the credit he will give.

You have a new SBT you'll sell for shipping and a 12pack? If so LMK your paypal and what beer you like!!!

Havent made a junkyard trip yet. Flat rates are like 15 bucks for a medium. I drink pale ale.

Sbt cranks are garbage. Id rather bolt a sunken oem crank into a engine than a brand new best ever built sbt piece of crap. To each their own.

So can you elaborate more on why you feel they are bad?
There a lot of people here that haven’t had any issues with them.

Let’s see. SBT takes a blown up crank worth nothin (trash) take it all apart on an assembly line. They toss the busted pieces, and put a Frankenstein crank back together with the ‘good’ pieces. Maybe a new bearing here or there, from China no doubt... slap a fantastic warranty on just the crank and send it. Ymmv. It’s not worth risking even a $500 engine, and has no business being in a $5000 engine.
