Crazy

Just saw this ad on Jeg's...crazy how a motor with 4x the cylinders costs 1/4 the price of some of these motors we buy. And 2 strokes are supposed to be cheaper than 4 strokes!

Yup, it's sure crazy. But, that's what happens when there's such a small market. Just like how a fully programmable CDI for a ski is the same price as a programmer for a high tech car(400$ish).

Hey stop complaining. And just pay up. Your Money is going towards things you don't see like drunken weekends with hookers. And large lines of blow. It took me a long time to figure this out myself. But now I've got it and have fallen in line with the rest

Jeg's are right down the road, tricked car bling adds up too.

Or from the retailer's perspective, it's a lost leader.

v8 Ski nice. I saw something like that once that had a v8 in it. Looked like a 80s giant aqua jet SX1 except with a mercruiser 8.

I was pretty torn between a nice am hull/motor combo and a new truck. I went with the ski instead. Still getting poop from everyone but they will never understand.

apples to apples... A billet small block chevy is $6500 for a bare block. Add a lightweight crank, special cam and custom pistons and you can see $75K easy.

LW crank, cam and pistons are $68,500? Or did you mean 7.5K? Still apples to apples the Dasa billet crank cases are $3100, cylinders are $2800 so the bare block is $5900 for a two cylinder two stroke. I know it's all about supply and demand and we're in a small niche market, I just saw the price of a performance v8 motor and thought it was crazy how cheap it is compared to our 2 cylinders.

I made a slight leap there from a couple parts to a specialty built pro series engine that would compare to a built 1200. The $75k came from the show street outlaws.

I'll chime in on this one too. I have received my yellow belt (newb) in production. Yes, its much more cost effective to produce a couple thousand price/unit than it is to make a 100 of the same. I can tell you that two stroke molds are much more intricate and difficult to get right, than a big four stroke mold (got a bit of time spent in a couple of foundries). Machine time, there are a few machinist on this forum, ask them. My little cylinders are not easy to machine (with any quality) and a big v8 is not much harder or expensive. Its mainly volume. But try to buy an equally built v8 and see where the price is, performance marine v8's, not so cheap.
I wish it was more like 102nd7's explanation, at least for me.
An old man who had won the lottery was asked "what happened to all the millions you won?" His reply, "I gambled, drank, and chased women. The rest I wasted."

If it makes you feel any better, I just spent $1500-$2000 just in gaskets, bearings, and some other wear items to rebuild my four cylinder Porsche engine... And that was reusing most stuff (pistons alone are about $650 each for stock...)
Maybe look at the power per displacement in relation to cost... Our engines make much more power than chevys that are 5 or more times the displacement...

When I started this thread it was just for fun, if I was really that upset about prices I wouldn't own a Dasa 1200. You've gotta pay to play and I like to play and have as much fun doing it as possible, which usually means spending more money.

All legitimate explanations aside, this sport costs money! I agree! @hink320

Now I'm looking at enclosed trailers... I call it self-inflicted financial depression (S.I.F.D.)

Haha I hear ya @rileym21, I was lucky enough my buddy who has an electrical company bought a new enclosed trailer and sold me his 4 year old 7x14 for only $1500 last year so it didn't inflict too much financial depression.
