Cut WDK RIP hood to fit stock 62T airbox?

Hey guys. I’m almost ready to put in my newly built motor but I was wondering if anyone had experience with the WDK and cutting the hood to fit the factory 62T air box? It only needs a little bit cut but I wasn’t sure if that would severely affect the integrity of the hood or not? It seems very flimsy in the area I wanted to cut. I didn’t think it would be a big deal but wanted to check before I did it. It’s not sealed in the area either.

The area I wanted to cut is about where the yellow box is. I just set the motor in for a test fit so it looks really ugly in the hull right now.

You can't just cut it out. You would need to make a recess/do some glass work so the hood liner and breather tube's can do their job. Can the flame arrestor be heated/molded down?
Or Just run a/m arrestors like we all do and make sure to run a coupler cover or make a cover out of turf for the carbs and you won't have any issues.

There are no breather tubes on this hood. It’s sealed completely except for two spots in the front where it seems to just have not been glued down all the way. There isn’t a way for air to get to the motor through this hood in its current form. If I cut it then it would have a small path but nothing like a superjet hood. The current openings are almost the thickness of a zip tie and about 2 inches wide, near the front of the hood.

Where I wanted to cut would be clear of the hood seal area. So I didn’t think it would affect that. Are you saying it would flex that much more where it would break the seal on the outside support?

I was told that the factory air box was the best to run if I could get it to work. If I have to I can always get the aftermarket flame arrestees.

Where is your engine getting air from then? I have a rip and a weapon, they both require you to drill holes in the liner to install breather tube's. The liner is open at the two ears at the back of the hood on each side. That's where the engine sucks in air.
If running 800cc+ you add a hole underneath one of the front wings.

Currently it’s only getting it from the hand pole’s dual holes. It was only running a 61x. Just built a 62t/61x ported cylinder setup from jet maniac. Dual factory carbs, WDK pipe, Zeel, girdled head with 37cc domes to keep pump gas. Do you think I’ll need to modify the hood for more air then with this setup?

This is my first aftermarket ski so I’m trying to fix all of the bull**** from the guy I bought it off of currently.

Whether or not that's enough air is outta my wheelhouse, sorry. I had hood breathers on my 701 setups.
Also on a freestyle ski with a programmable ignition you could easily safely run 35ccs.

Your other option would be to try to find 2 js440 stock flame arrestors. They're metal and low profile. Plus they don't let water in the engine.

Ok thanks! I will see what I can find out and do some more research. For now i may find another option in the interim.

Thank you! That sounds like a good alternative.

If you have a few days I've been working on a sbn38 version of my bolt on flame arrestors that might fit your hull without chopping. Total height of the airbox is 3.4".
That looks awesome! I would be willing to try that out. Do you want to PM me with your details?

Those look very nice. I found your thread recently and have considered buying a set. I don't like open style filters especially on a surf or rec style ski because of water getting into the engine. Crankshaft aren't cheap.
