Super Jet Cutting down stock superjet hood

Hey guys trying to cut down my one superjet hood. I took about an inch and half off the top to match the lowered nose piece and took some foam and glued back into where I had cut out the fiberglass and shaped it really nice, however I had a hunch that the fiberglass resin would eat up the foam and thats what happened. I was thinking about using and shaping a pice of wood and then glassing over that.. Has anyone else cut their hood down that they can help guide me at all to the best solution?
