Cutting Rear Corners!!!

Me and my buddy have been talking lately about cutting out the lip under the rear corners of the tray. Basically cutting the bondline flat across the back of the ski out to the corners to reduce drag while surfing? My whole theory is that you can get even further tucked back into a wave with much less chance of nosing in if that lip is no longer hanging down causing all that drag. The only thing keeping me from breaking out the air saw is that I don't want to lose any cornering ability. It seems that down-facing lip helps with grip while turning. Any experience??? Help a Brutha' out! :fing02:
How do like how the ski rides without the tray sides? any advantages on the wave?

Yeah, you too dude. You could have taken it for a spin! We have to take a trip up there and ride with some of the Auggie dudes! The wife has been talking about doing a little sightseeing up there so that would be a perfect excuse to bring the ski. :icon16:
The hull is now cut, I have to go out tomorrow and give it a try. I'm pretty pumped to see if there's much difference.

give an idea of when you want to come and weather pending we'll try and get the pontoon in the water

you will be ruined after that :Banane25:

Niiice! Anything with pontoons is always a treat!

So I cut the rear lip out and that thing is more nimble than ever. I noticed a little more porposig at higher speeds but I'll take that considering the gains I got. I had it out in a little small surf yesterday and so far so good. Re-entries seem to be a hundred times smoother both on the launch and the landing. I dig it. :nutkick: Maybe I just notice little things on the hull, but this made a night and day difference in handling to me. Highly recommended if you want to shred hard! Thanks for the pics and motivation all.

I definately think so. More room to play around in the tray. You can dig a foot way out in the corner and carve pretty nicely. It felt a little strange in the first couple hours but once I got into it, it felt totally natural. It makes me feel almost more "in tune" with the ski for some reason. You can side mount it in the surf with total ease. Bend a knee, turn the bars and gas it and your up. It also doesn't seem to wash out sideways when you are getting really tucked into the white stuff.

I'm glad to here it worked well; that rear lip just acts like a water brake IMO.

I noticed more porpoising at high speed but thought it had something to do with the V-cut shorter ride plate.

Someone needs to make a ride plate that automatically extends longer at high speed and stays retracted for low speed freestyle use. :thinkerg:

hey spug, i looked around but never found the build thread for this. did you do one? btw, i think i met you in daytona this year, brad right? anyway, love that ski seems perfect for my kind of riding. would love to check it out sometime. i'm thinking about doing this to a square.. let me know. thanks

Have you guys cut the whole rear lip off, or just the sides to open the bondline channel.

Would leaving the central area of the rear lip (over the pump) intact minimize the increased porpoising that is experienced? Or would this simply negate the effects of opening the bondline channels?

Has anyone experienced increased leakage into their foam? Noticeable decreased tray strength, cracking, etc...

I'm not using a trim setup, so I don't have to worry about maximizing room for nozzle travel.

Thanks

Can this be done without reinforcing the bond line from the inside? I dont want to weaken that area of the hull.

Yup, that's me. No build thread but if you want any help, drop me a PM and I'll throw you my number.

It's pretty thick back there. I don't think you'll really weaken anything since you are only cutting that 90 degree edge going down. Go for it dude. :fing02:

When the hull halves are glued together the excess epoxy squirts out the lip area and the rest goes inside the hull. Sometimes there are even air pockets between the lip sections.

Just cutting the rear lip off shouldn't affect the sealing. It has plenty of support because it's directly over the pump cavity and near the rails, so flexing shouldn't be a problem.

One thing I noticed immediately when I went to pull the ski back into the garage... After cutting that back lip, I realized how much I use that lip to push and pull the ski into position on the trailer, off the beach, etc.

Did this have any noticeable affect when setting up wake on flat water? Pretty tempted to do mine if it does not
