Dayoop's Hood Mod

Well I hacked into my hood to make some hand holds a few weeks ago when I was starting my square build, I figured I could just do that and not have a problem, well turns out I was going to be having niagra falls come into my hood liner and I needed to mod the hood. With talking to you guys on here and John at blowsion I came up with this somewhat easy hood mod, that retains the stock liner but fills in both vents and the 6 small holes in the front of the hood, I also added more air intakes as you can see in the pics.

I used west systems epoxy resin and the filler from blowsion to act as a bondo, I also laid glass over the vents and the holes.

If you see any problems or having any suggestions before I paint please let me know. Should I keep the one holes open and one blocked in the liner like it is, change them around or keep both open?

Without liners behind the handholds you will have problems with subs, fountains, etc. Your boat will fill up FAST.

Have you ever put a bucket underwater upside down? You'll notice that it keeps a pocket of air in it. Think what would happen if you put a 2" hole in the top of your bucket and tried the same thing. A lot of the freestyle hoods work sort of like that. Plus they pull all of their air from the back of the hood which is out of the water usually when doing fountains.

I could be wrong...

you need buckets under your handholds or youre screwed. thats why you have to take out the stock liner, to put in buckets, and then put in a new liner. your setup will fill you up in a heartbeat

stick a couple of bilge pumps in that hood!
haha

if you cap off that front drain hole now, the engine cant breath.

if you dont cap it off, all of the water in the hood ( nearly 10 gallons or so) is going to dump into your engine compartment after you have been under water.

I would tape over those hand holds until you get some drop in liners, or glass back over them and ad a strap to your pole if you really need somewhere to hold on to.

ive gotten used to grabbing the side rails when ever I get up on my hood.

two tips on the hood mod i learned the hard way at lanier

make your handhold liner strong and use more than two layers to secure it, and reinforce your hood hook area a lot.

...that or don't let jeff marsh ride ur ski  see attached evidence

even with the new air intakes in the rear am I still going to have problems? I really dont want to make a new liner this season, but I do a lot of subs and I dont want to have problems. And even with one of the liner intakes closed? I cant see the liner holding that much water even if it was filled all the way up.

The surface area of those handholds are probably 4 times what the stock intakes were.

since you didnt get to see your work, other side is cracked too but not as bad. need to port your engine, probably less work than fixing my boat after every time i let you ride it.

note: i had 2X3" aluminum, 1/4 thick behind that ******** too.

they seem about the same actually but they are also closer to the liner intake holes and dont have fins either. I dunno, im gonna ride it and see how it is, john at blowsion said thats what I should do if I dont want to cut the liner.

It seems like everyone including myself says to just make a new liner. Your going to run into problems with that hood set-up. Just take some extra time and do it the right way.

Blowsion does make those rear tubes like that, but they also use buckets behund the handholds. http://www.blowsion.com/product/services/hood_mods.asp

really, if somebody like me can do the hood liner, so can you. It takes maybe 2 days working in the evening. I'll upload some pic of mine in my gallery. hope it helps.

ill second that.......

here's a pic of my handiwork....ok, so I went a little overboard on the liquid nails....but the thing is solid, you can stand on it!

oh, and there's also a pic of the blwsion liner installed on the red hood behind it...

well I had to paint today so thats what I did, I can always mod the liner w/p painting again right? I did do a test using a shop vac and it fit right into the two liner holes. So what I did was suck each side and like you all said more air came from the hand holds, but when I stuck my hand over one it would come from my new air intakes. Kinda strange, when the hose was on one side of the hood itd come in from the opposite side.

So if and when I do mod the liner with my current set up what do I do besides box in the hand holds? Can I keep my intake tubs and then make more either in the back or front then make a larger liner to cover those.

Im kinda bummed this isnt gonna work like I want, the guys at blowsion said if be fine but maybe they too thought I was gonna somehow box the hand holds in.

you could just cut out the sections of the liner then youll have the room to put the handcups in. once theyre in, you can glass the pieces back into the liner that you removed from the liner for access.

you NEED handcups in those holds.

dont listen to blowsion. theyve obviously steered you wrong.

if I did that will I have to re-open the holes in the front of the hood. Im not sure if the 1 1/4 inch tubes I put in the back of the hood will supply enough air. thanks for the help and opinions, i guess this first build is a learning experience and the future ones will go much easier.
