Sorry dude..... just trying to help

I learn from the best :)

thanks for input... we'll see how she holds up... wifey gave me the OK to buy a new hull after this season if mine continues to break... so, i'm kinda secretly hoping for the worst...

If I had a fresh brand new SJ I would not reinforce it. I would go 13/16, pipe, head and ride!

So I agree. I would not reinforce here on Lake Erie and we ge some rough stuff.

I hear SXR's hulls need nothing for sure!

my hull is cracked up pretty good from Lake Erie... however, I only reinforced mine after 5 seasons of riding though...

my buddy's SXR has bond line cracks starting in the gel coat... and around the pole bracket... again, Lake Erie

but i do agree... a newbie rider on lake erie need not reinforce

I think I agree...

or if anything, Id do the bondline and a single layer of glass

thats basicaly what I did to the fx-1 as well

Your Superjet was heavy because it was waterlogged, not because of the reinforcement it had. :cheer:

And besides, it was never inverted...

It definatly shed some weight once I refoamed......but that hull is INDESTRUCTIBLE!

the reinforcement was a top notch job..with the best part being that the hood seal/lip area...you coudnt even wiggle it it was so stout

i really beefed the nose as well when I crunched it, both inside and out

Frosty you should be fine, dont worry about it.... just remember for future.

geeze... I feel like some of you guys need a good talking too.

Idok.... for you I would say no reinforcement would be fine.... untill you sack up for a role

As I said if you want to get inverted REINFORCE!

If you wait till after the hull cracks..... there is absolutly no integrety in the ares where it is cracked..... now you will have to reinforce a hole sh*t ton in orded for it to be strong again..... reinforce before it breaks!!!!!

I did one layer of Kevlar, and it was not enough,.

Now I am in the process of laying up the entire ouutside of the boat with 3 or 4 layers of 6-8oz S-glass.... I have already grinded down all the Gel coat..... the hull will be very strong and far less brittle then ever before.... but yes, its alot of work.... but it would have sucked to sand up the Kevlar, kevlar is a bitch to sand and cut...... all the fracture cracking was on the outside of the hull anyways... as always

I strongly dissagree w/ the idea to not reinforce...

my reasons:
  1. it's not hard to do
  2. Sj's are horribly weak stock, but light (compared to most hulls)
  3. fixing a crack or hole after is much more work and costly too since you will need to re-paint as well.
  4. Flatwater is very rough on a ski... lots of throwing the ski around and it landing in strange ways
  5. 95% of flat riders I see never get around on rolls, even the good ones, so they are landing on the sides pretty much all the time.
  6. raises the value of ski and makes the ski much more sound and rigid
  7. tray areas on sj's are horrible weak... it's mandatory to reinforce
  8. reduces wear and tear of a long period of time and will make your hull last much longer
  9. why not have the ski ready for your progression... It would suck to have the balls one day to finally try something but not be prepared w/ the proper ski mods
  10. not having this mod will hold you back and make you more tenative about learning new stuff
it's just a very smart mod to do and there is no reason to not do it... the weight difference is nothing 2-5lbs at the most... I'll take on 5lbs to know my ski will not fall apart.

I do wish i had reinforced before my ski started to crack.

has anyone developed bond line cracks after reinforcing? I'm talking on a ski that had no cracks prior to reinforcing.

I don't think any amount of reinforcement will keep the nose on your ski if you hit sand bottom. It may save it from leaking in water, but the rail will still be gone.
My 97 hull has some pimp CF reinforcement front to back by an Unknown person and it still has cracks around the hood seal and sides.
On my squarenose, I only did under the pole area. But is has the same cracks around the hood seal area as the reinforced roundnose.

I did not reinforce my sons boat:banghead: the fourth time I rode it (including tune time) I broke the hull in 2 places at the hood seal area:banghead: . It would have been adventages to at least beef up the hood seal area. New paint and fresh cracks = major frustration.

I desroyed a heavily reinforced ski in 1 year... just imagine how long it would have lasted w/o.... I say 2 weeks

point is... don't let the ski get all waek and stressed out before you re-inforce... it's not the optimum way to make your hull last... I will agree that different levels of re-inforcement are valid... You must alway re-inforce though...

I agree with a tray area. it needs help. my friends 91 looks like a saggy old lady. if you have your motor out throw a couple layers of s glass on there. otherwise ride it.

I have worked on stock squares w/ 1/4 of the foam missing...
the quality control over there is not alway spot on..

Does anybody have exerience with reinforement on SXR's. I have heard that it is not necessary for flatwater and I have heard that it is.

We all know that you want to add a little weight as possible to the tanks we call SXRs.

Any thoughts?
