Rodney Dangerfield working his new Yamaha Superjet, last weekend. I rode it a couple sessions and I have some initial thoughts. Since purchasing, Rodney's done a few tweaks to his ski:
Rideplate
Grate
Exhaust mod
Pole spring
RIVA rear sponsons
Throttle return spring removal

These pics were before I changed out his steering to RRP ovp and 4 degree bar. Carbon pole tubes, and pre 2008 steering cable.

The steering, as in all post 2008 Suoerjets is horrible. So,we're looking forward to testing it again now that it should corner better,

Is the cable mod and Macboost poles a must @Aquaholic ?

Absolutely a must do. Yamaha screwed up the steering on this ski just as they did with the 2008+ boats. The steering cable doesn't have enough throw. So, replacing it with the longer throw cable plus the relocating bracket is something I would do before even putting the ski in the water.
The carbon pole tubes are primarily cosmetic. With the ovp steering setup in the shortest position the pole has lost about 3 inches in length. It's still too long for my tastes. But, it's not my boat.

Looks like sunbeam lake!, can you give me the lowdown on the Throttle return spring removal? My finger gets sore on mine, did the sponsons fix the unhook off the pump at hard lean? Kommander has some universal bond line sponsons they recommended over the riva...

Yamaha put a dual throttle return spring arrangement on the throttle position sensor. It's overkill. You can simply unhook one of the two (it doesn't matter which), and call it a day. Or, remove the cable drum (2 screws) from the TPS and remove one of the springs, entirely. Note: If you're experiencing a hesitation off of idle , this would be a good time to adjust/sync the TPS.

Rodney is running a Riva intake grate and Riva rear sponsons. Early on, there weren't a whole lot of choices. But, currently there are alternatives. His setup is substantailly better than stock. But, it still has that cavitation issue, when pushed hard, that so many people are complaining about. He's going to try a Watercross of Texas or Jet dynamics rideplate next.

Swapping out the OEM steering with the ovp leaves this nub exposed on the edge of the pole. Perfect for putting your Dentist's kids through college. So...

Then, to address the cavitation issue, Rodney is swapping out the RIVA grate for this Watercross of Texas.

@Aquaholic thanks for the headsup on the spring! it was actually easier than i thought to remove one of the springs. I only had to remove the 10mm nut on the throttle plate then removed the outer spring, no re clocking or having to re adjust the TPS as the plate is indexed on the shaft.

I'm surprised that this hull doesn't work better if Kommander helped engineer it, maybe its on purpose so you buy a GP1 hull !

We swapped out the Riva intake grate for the more aggressive WCOT grate. Also, I sync'd up the throttle position sensor. This is easily accomplished by removing the 2 bolts that holds the TPS unit to the hull. Loosen the 2 anti tamper T25 bolts and this will then allow you to rotate the TPS. Hook the ski up to a hose and start the motor. Let it idle and then rotate the TPS until the RPM's just begin to rise. Then, back the TPS down slightly to to where it just returns to idle, and tighten bolts. That's all there is to it. This syncs the throttle wheel with the TPS. If you have a bit of a lag in throttle response, this will probably help.

We tested all of Rodney's new stuff, yesterday.

Next up is a Reflash of the ECU and a prop change.

How was the steering improvement with OVP and 96-07 cable? I have swapped mine but haven’t been able to take it out!
Big improvement! You don't realize how bad the steering is on this thing until you fix it! I'd still like to see more throw , and I have some ideas on how to get it. That said, If we were doing it all over again, Tomski's bundled steering kit would be the better way to go. It will have more throw. The thing to keep in mind though, is no matter what you do to a 4stroke Superjet, it is never going to turn as well as the old jet.

Curious: Question to Aquaholic's post .Why would a 4 stroke turn less than a 2 stroke Superjet ? Also: if the turning is soo bad , why doesn't Yamaha install better system during manufacturing ? Safety issue maybe ?
