Different types of bars?

Looking to replace the bars on my 2017 SJ (ODI Grips aren't fitting on the OEM bar). From what I have read, I should simply buy a new bar and it should plug and play with my current steering system. Someone also mentioned the 2017 brackets for AM steering systems is unfeasible and most likely will not work.. So, I guess if that's the case...

What bars and angles would you recommend, and why?
- Zero degree bars to stay close to the handpole..
- Bars with the dirtbike style padding or straight bar..
- Steering system..
- Enough space for ODI grips
- Looking for quality

I have the RRP basic steer system with RRP flat/straight bars on my RN SJ and the money is worth the upgrade. Ditching the stock bars is a MUST on a factory ski IMO. I used to use the ski for freeride and boat chasing before i upgraded and i cant imagine going back to the factory bars/grips/throttle. If you dont want to change the steer system you can get bars that will work with the factory steer plate. Message jet maniac and he will get you setup with everything you need and make sure you're not ordering parts that don't fit your ski.

Be aware that an aftermarket steer system requires you to drill 4 holes in your stock pole.

Fabulous! I was hoping it just wasn't me who felt the OEM steering on the SJ is awful. Not sure on the previous years but I know I have a short throw cable for throttle. Won't this prove to be painful if I decide to upgrade the steering plate and throttle? I figured I could start with bars, (factory steering), grips. However, I want better steering..

Depends on which upgrades you do and in what order. Putting zero degree bars with v shape in the middle will improve steering position, but the main issue is lack of steering throw on your ski.

Starting in 2008 Yamaha changed the SuperJet handlepole to have a shorter pole. The top casting of the pole was changed in '08 to a shorter piece with a shorter throw cable for some reason no one seems to know why. The 08-up steering cable is shorter in throw to fit this new pole design. This is why the 2008-up do not turn as well as 1996-2007 SuperJets.

You can change the steering cable to the longer throw of the 96-07 SJ cable, but you have to modify cable mount area, and the cable attachment point needs to modded and moved on the pole. We sell a relocation bracket to fit the longer throw cable.

After replacement you can take advantage of a/m steering systems with more throw and also move the attachment point inward on steering nozzle for more throw as well.

Thanks for the help. This seems like a large, time consuming endeavor to change out the steering? Would I be correct on that assumption? The ski seems to track well at higher speeds and has no problem carving, but the radius seems wide and you have to give a ton of throttle to not fall off the side while turning.. It just doesn't feel right.. I have seen the dudes (on what I assume are much larger cc engines, some SJs) out practicing and they can turn on a dime at slow or fast speeds. Like I said, my ski wobbles what I assume is excessive at slow speeds(I know this is not user error).. Assuming my ski has enough power, I would imagine this can be solved given your recommendation.

Which leads me to: As I heavily trust your opinion, would you recommend doing the full listed transition into A/M steering? Will this make steering easier and more fun or slippery at slow speeds because I don't have enough power. I am a complete newb to the expectations out of modifications and am trying to make sure I ask the questions to get the result I am looking for. Thanks

(I will also be coming to you for parts given all of your help)

Of course, the more experience you have as a rider, the better you can turn and ride your ski, but quicker turning ratio will help you to ride better quicker. And even after you are a better rider, you will still want the better steering.

It is a bit of work to install the cable and mod the pole and install the bracket, but it is totally worth it. This is the only way to make your ski turn better. You do not have to change out your steering turn plate. You can move the pivot ball outward on the plate and inward on the nozzle.

Maybe @John1911 can comment, he just completed installing the cable, bracket, and new bars on his 2014 SJ.

So to give you the run down. I wish I did this the day I bought it, it is a night and day difference. You can steer much sharper as it increases the steering throw which allows you to get the jetski to slide much much easier. Especially if you do the quick steer mods which are really simple there's plenty of write ups on those. As far as installing the cable it really wasn't all that hard and any frustration met installing the cable is instantly calmed once you get to ride it, it's that good. You will need a Dremel, a drill, and some taps for the install, however. Steps to install cable were as listed:

1. Remove pole pad and covers.
2. Remove old steering cable
3. Hollow out the old cable mount location to allow clearance for new mount (JetManiac or I can provide you pictures).
4. Feed new cable and mock up the mount to make sure its works and allows proper throw.
5. Draw marker lines for where you want to drill.
6. Drill and mount new bracket
7. (Optional but highly suggested) Do quick steer mods.
7. Hook up and adjust steering cables.
8. Ride and ask yourself why you didn't do this sooner.
(I think that is all the steps I did)

May seem difficult, but I'm no expert either.

Highly suggest, should come from the factory like this.

Thanks a lot! Any pictures, shopping list of items and sizes(tools too), and how much beer I'll need to do this is greatly appreciated! @JetManiac - Any chance we can put together a shopping list of all things I'll need to give you all my monies for?

I will also be planning to do the quick steer mods, so I'll need help figuring out what I'll need for that, and then I can search through posts to find the how-to.

I really appreciate all help. This has been such a learning curve getting into jet skis.

It takes a bit to learn everything but once you know it there's nothing hard about these skis. They are super easy to work on. Can have them pretty much stripped to a hull and anything you would need to take out or put back in in an hours time.

Get the thrust steering. Was easy to install and I haven't found the need to change my cable. Ski has plenty of steering.

yes stock pole and chinpad. on a '17 superjet. just call thrust and order it. you will need bars as well.

Do you have a part number or link to the actual item you ordered? This will save me a lot of time and money so thank you for commenting! Are you seeing vast improvements over stock steering - Tight carving, quick turnarounds?

Ya I didn't change my steering cable either like everyone on here says you need to do. I found that just by mounting the new steering improves the turning radius and brought the bars about 4" closer to the pole. Not sure about the part number but thrust has only 2steering clamps that he makes, an adjustable one and fixed one. I don't think many people get the adjustable one, not sure why you would need it.
