do i need an msd for a b pipe?

just installed my new b pipe tonight, Greg Brock at freestyle factory helped me out, went on pretty easy. put all the guts of my 701 sn into a rn hull i bought. it has a 12/17 skat swirl, stock motor. I've heard that you need an msd with the pipe or you won't reach full rpms? anyone running a b pipe without an msd? thanks guys

Your stock CDI has a rev limiter built in so it should be removed or replaced to take full advantage of the pipe. The basic b-pipe with the limited chamber will max out around 7250 rpm when tuned well and if you want some more mid-range power an MSD enhancer or programmable ignition would be a good addition.

  • 6M6 CDI (650 models) 6500-6600 rpm limit
  • 61X CDI (701 94/95) 7050-7150 rpm limit
  • 62T CDI (701 96+) 7050-7150 rpm limit

Save your $$ for something like total loss. Enhancers are known to fail, offer no performance gain other then raising rpm limit, til they fail. Get your oem one modded before wasting $$ on a new one.

X2 what motorman said. Just get the rev limiter removed out of your stock cdi. I don't think enhancers are worth the money. They seem to be unreliable and really don't offer any performance gain that I have noticed.

ive had an enhanser for 4 years and no problems, my friends have had theirs for even longer, as long as the e-box is dry and things are hooked up right it lasts

from what i've read msd's seem like they tend to fail a lot, if removing the stock rev limiter does almost as good of a job, then i will go with that, and maybe buy a high compression head or something along those lines. opinions still welcome!!!

Stator lighting coils tend to go bad after some years of use and this is when the MSD enhancer helps as it partly runs off the battery I've been told....
In fact my buds ski with bad stator and MSD enhancer runs just fine, with stock ignition will not even start.

Running a b pipe on stock limiter setting is horrible, you'll be hitting the limiter all the time..

Advance your stator 3 degrees (and no more) if you want the enhancer benefit for free, also remove the resistor that does the limiter on the stock cdi and your set. Just remember though that you will have no rev p

any more opinions?

Your cheapest way out is simply modding the stock CDI. I like to replace the 100 Ohm resistor with an 80 Ohm for a rev limit around 7400. I will raise it a little more for higher ports and shorter pipes. Eliminating the limit will allow the engine to free rev over 9000. If you do this make sure to remove the muffler so that it will feel really fast when it comes out of the water.

The MSD does three things over a stock CDI

1)It makes a hotter spark, which is a big advantage restarting a flooded/sunk motor.

2)It changes the timing curve(the noticeable feel from this is arguable)

3)It gives rev limiter adjustment ability which is very important once you add a pipe. You will most likely find your pump coming unhooked at high RPM due to bouncing off the rev limiter if this function of the CDI is not changed after adding a pipe.

As for them failing? I haven't seen one fail yet. Please everyone with failed ones send them to me.

I run an enhancer on every boat I own. If I lived near the lake and rode flatwater/freshwater I would run total loss but it is not doable for me as a surf rider with a long ride to the waves. I need reliability which the enhancer provides. I want to fill my tank to the brim and ride for a few hours with the bilge on and multiple start/stops without worrying about a dead battery either. That is the biggest downfall of total loss.

Thanks for the info guys, so should I get a girdled head and mod the cdi, or just spend the coin on an
Enhancer?

dont really have $350 to throw around, only want to get one if its absolutely necessary and makes a $350 difference lol. still getting mixed answers!

You don't have $350, so you want to spend $350on a girdled head kit which isn't absolutely needed either?
