Do people run a water restrictor in the B pipe stinger line?

08 SJ with a 701, mild porting, 180/180 compression, stock 38's and a B pipe with a flow control valve. When the valve opens it dumps a ton of water in the stinger, should I also run a restrictor in the line?

I'm probably over thinking this, but with duel cooling is it possible to move water too fast thru the engine and therefore not giving it time to absorb the heat?

Yes and yes

If your not running bouys wide open all time, Yes run a restricter, 2mm or so and checks water box temp... about 130

I run restricters on the pisser too.. depending on your water temp and ride style will determine the size.... winter here maybe 53 deg Iam at 2mm for 130 to 140 engine temp... summer 65 or 70 ish I'll go 2.37mm or 75/80 I'll do 2.77
For flat water rising not wide open or bouys..

What type of restrictor is your prefered setup? Something like one of these I assume?

No, I use old carb seats and drill them out. 2.0, 2.37, 2.77 and up.. not had to use any bigger than this though.. needle
Side towards the pisser so it doesn't act like a debri bucket lol
Same^ You should be able to get 1.2 seats from any vendor for a couple bucks with your next order and drill it out. I also drill out the inside a hair bigger so it fits over the brass barb on the stinger.

Just to clear this up, water moving too fast through the cooling system will cool more efficiently and remove more heat, thus keeping the engine cooler. Restrictors slow down the water (flow rate) and allow the engine to build more heat. This is why riders in cold climates tend to need restrictors.

Okay thanks for the clarification, I thought if the water was slowed down it would have more time to absorb more heat.

For a general lake ski, no racing what is the optimal water or head temp?

Our water temp is about 85, air is 75 in the am and 90's in the pm. The head is usually about high teens (119) in the am and mid 20's (126) in the PM. Water box is about the same.
One of the reasons I'm asking is this ski is very quiet compared to other SJ's on the lake with a pipe. The Stock WB holes have been opened up some by Tim J, but I would think it would make it louder. That's why I'm thinking I have too much water going thru the stinger. The pipe it self is hot, but only sizzles if you run hard and open the hood quickly.

Agreed - it sounds like you're dumping more water than necessary into the waterbox. Running a restrictor on your stinger (I run a ~ 3mm on my stinger) is advised regardless of water temp. As for restrictors on your pisser, you'll have to experiment to get your motor to the proper temp. Every setup is different. An advantage to restrictors at the pisser and stinger (assuming proper engine temp is maintained) is that you'll raise the pressure in your cooling system and get more consistent spray out of your water screw fittings in your headpipe.

Everything I've heard is that optimal is 140 for the head and ~120 for water exit temp.

For the stinger I'd set the FC to
Open around 3500 to 4000 rpm. You could start with three 3mm restricters, short ride and get a temp reading quickly. If still not 130 on the box and 140 engine head temp, try 2mm at the stinger and 2.77 in the pissers...and retest...

I run my engine temp at 125-130. I run dual cooling and restrict both pissers and the stinger with nylon bushings at 5mm diameter. The water box gets up to about the same temp when riding WOT, but I have a FCV and don't do too much WOT riding. so its usually in the low teens. Water temp is not too hot, 60-65 degrees. I'd say you have to gauge water temp to determine restristor size for sure.

I use these to restrict/adjust engine temps. Only 8$ for two shipped on amazon.

A piece of 1/4 fuel line inside the 3/8 water line is also a quick and easy fix. Gives you a idea if your going to benfiit from it or not before spending any money

I like the pinch idea but would be nervous about the line.....obviously its a cheaper solution...

View attachment 339544 Jetworks also has these a little more pricy
I've got a bunch of those but I never use them. on my XS1200 I used cheap 1/4" drive sockets in the lines. some have smaller holes than others due to casting differences.
everybody thinks dual cooling is some holy grail mod when in fact most motors run too cold, which aint good. better to run a bit too hot than too cold. if you look at the piston tops and they don't have carbon on them, its running too cold.
