So I'm looking through my mail today and receive a letter from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency asking me to fill out a survey whether or not I support a measure to begin titleing PWC in Tennessee and then why or why not. The title transfer fee would be $20.

I answered yes as it would help to control theft.

What about you people? Yay or nay? Why?

I hate to give money to the gov. I would rather pay for GPS bugs for each thing I owned if I had a choice.

But Ohio already has it and I'm insured so I don't need bugs.

But if I was starting fresh with no laws and todays tech I would take GPS over insurance AND titling.

So, for me in your situation, I say No. They (The Gov.) are not going to prevent your stuff from being stolen.

GPS tracker would only work until the thief removes it...

I'm against it. The government doesn't need any more red tape to wade through.

I support it, to the tune of $38/year in registration PLUS property taxes every single year. I think last year it was around $100 total for 2007.

Absolutely not.
The state and federal governments get too much of our money already.
Requiring titles for cars does not seem to stop car thieves. Why should you expect it to be different with skis? Granted the thief couldn't stroll down to the DMV and register a stolen ski, but he certainly could part it out.

No.

The least valueable part of my ski is the hull, and it's the only thing the government keeps track of. It's a tax. There'd be more thefts if there was no tracking, but a title doesn't do anything more than a registration would.

I'd vote no. A registration tracks the ski, it's cheaper and easier to deal with one that has a lost title. Lose the title, good bye ski.

I oppose it, For example, little off topic, but I bought a cheap small harbor freight trailer for my superjet and put down 2 2x4s and some carpet for a cheap trailer, The trailer was 199.99, I paid 80.00 Dollars to title and register it in NC and then last week they sent me a property tax bill on it for about 95 bucks, thats 175 for a 200 dollar trailer in one year WTF? Luckly Im in the military and Im not actually NC resident so I dont have to pay the property tax. So no titling, But Im fine with paying for Registration every year if the money goes towards Roads, or in our case lakes/Rivers/Beaches ect. But not for titling and property tax.

definitly yes,,,, that way you have some idea of where its been and theft also.

Really? How does a title tell you where it's been? I've had a total of seven titled skis, and none of the titles told me where the ski had been.
Not sure how a title prevents theft, either.

Imagine it is the same as everything else. Title search to tell you where the ski has been, but without every state requiring it, it would be impossible to trace w/o centralization records via fed mandating (which would drive Madmat over the edge probably)! Add the fact that since there are so few of the skis, they bounce from one distant state to another…good luck. Then the stolen ones get their vin’s filed off (if they have them, idk)! Titling would require seller to produce title upon sale unless dealing with someone whom didn’t know better, which would happen (but it could reduce theft slightly…not enough to be worth the hassle probably). Like I know what I’m talking bout, but nobody else answered your question…so I thought about it!

I do like that part. The seller has to prove that they own the ski when selling it. I have purchased two skis where the owner never transferred ownership and therefore did not "legally own" the ski. The titles had the former owners on them.

Of course, after stating that, maybe boat titleing might be a huge hassle now that I think more about it as we jetskiers aren't a group that, by and large, has its act together.

its a constant hassle, people dont keep up with paper work, and like Shonuff said, sell stuff they dont own.

the worst case is when they owe a bank or finance company money on something, and sell it you for cash, then stop paying.

you get SCREWED.

Arkansas doesnt title boats, but the state titles trailers ( more trailers I guess, more revenue)

its a PITA, no one ever sells a trailer with a title here! so to make one legal, you have to buy a bonded title, or LIE and say its home-made, or actually buy a NEW one.

I think are some benifits from tracking ownership, but I think its more of a PITA than it would be worth.
