Does anyone test MSD total loss ignition modules? (P/N 4272)

I'm pretty sure my ignition module is not functioning, but would like to confirm it before hanging it on the wall. I have wired it up directly to the battery and when I short out the trigger wires, I cannot get the LED to glow. It just completely stopped working after I stopped it on the trailer on Thursday :aargh4:. Any thoughts on what I should look for would be greatly appreciated!

In the meantime, does anyone have a 4272 ignition module that they want to get rid of? :ugh:

What you did IS the test.

That's what MSD does, too. And they'll tell you it's toast.
No, they do not repair them.

And, I'm pretty sure MSD doesn't make the 4272's anymore, right?

samething happened to my buddies msd. worked on day then the next morning...nothing, i sent it back to msd for him and he got a new one because it was less then a year old. you will have to find a used one which could last or die anytime or bite the bullet and get a new dual pickup one.

what other choice do you have? advent? i am sure chuckie from team scream could set you up with a curve for your motor but i doubt you would want to run a stock flywheel. look for an automotive store that sell msd performance stuff and you may be able to get a brain a little cheaper then from a watercraft store.

Yeah, Advent is pretty much the only other choice I have, but those are $450 or something. Plus, I'd need a stator, electrical box, and a lightweight flywheel, so that would cost about as much as a new Total Loss system... It's going to be a loooooong winter.

Why not just run stock electrics(with modded cdi or enhancer) and lightened flywheel till you get it fixed? Im sure that thing will rip as it is.

I don't have any stock stuff anymore (sold it all with my old motor). In addition, only an Advent would provide the type of curve needed on an 8mm stroker. I could run a stock CDI or even an enhancer, but to make it safe at 7000rpm, it would be firing at 5º BTDC on the low end (and it's supposed to be about 26º). That motor would feel like a 701.

Nope, that was the old analog kind which supposedly have better reliability, but do not have the range of the digital.

Not only is it hard to get it to run right, but power would be significantly reduced. Who wants to ride a flat water backflip boat that doesn't have power to do a flat water backflip?

Why do you say this? A stroker's geometry doesn't inherently change ignition timing at all. Other things(port timing ,squish, comression,etc..) might require a substantially different timing curve, but not simply the fact that it's a stroker. A given stator set at the factory location will produce the same timing whether the stroke is 68mm or 76mm.:thinking:
