I'm considering building a trailer myself, but have yet to check on what the legal formalities are concerning it in Illinois.

What did all of you have to do to get your home made trailers safety & weight certified to be eligible for registration where you live?

nothing ..just built it and put my boat trailer plate on it .. painted it the same colour as my fourwinns boat trailer too so I can use that ownership that matches the trailer colour and plate .. BUT .. will walk into Canada services and register the trailer as "homebuilt" list aprox weight and colour and get its own plate .. all i have to do is pay teh one time trailer plate fee .. in my first posts in this thread you can see my brothers red trailer it is prtty much the same as mine but one foot longer .. he already did just that .. walked in got a ownership and plate as homebuilt .. no safetey required .. I think when its personal use and not over a specific size its that easy here in Canada

In MI we just have to get the trailer weighed, and take the weigh slip to Secretary of State with receipts for all materials used to build it. They charge a fee, and issue an identification number to affix to the frame, and a permanent trailer plate.

Was your van ordered that way from GM or is it a conversion? I've never seen a 4x4 van with a Duramax (in person) and was thinking that would be a pretty awesome tow vehicle for those of us that also have to deal with snow in the winter!

I got fed up with strapping the back of the ski down so I welded on a receiver tube under the trailer and its all hitch pinned together. Upright tube and bottom are adjustable. Just be sure to paint it before heading to the ocean lol

I converted my van to 4WD in my driveway. It was a lot of work, but worth the effort. It works great for a tow vehicle (as long as all you want to tow is a tag trailer), and gets through the sand very well when on the beach. I used it for deer hunting in Jan and it did great (MUCH better than expected) in the snow and mud, lots of mud. It also doubles as a "tent"...haha.

I'm not sure why the big three don't build 4WD vans from the showroom. Seems like there is a huge group of people who could use them (repair/service/trades/construction vans in winter, large family that needs 4WD for getting out, etc). I see vans everywhere, so they are clearly a popular platform...but why not 4WD? Quigley is as close to factory 4WD as it gets I guess.

took the sjs out for a test run .. and the trailer . good news is the sjs ran great ,, bad news is even after strengthening the trailer it still vibrates causes the whole car to vibrate a but .. not bad when you hit near 70 mph .. but lower and not good ..
long story short .. thought it was the tires or rims swaped them out with another set .. same thing .. so looking at my hubs .. wow couldnt believe it ! they are defective .. the studs are NOT centered .. studs on one side aout 2/8s to near 3/8s off ! the hub is off center ,,,, someone was sleeping at quality control .. talked to teh guy I bought teh axle off he says he will be bringing me a new set of hubs .. I hope .. he was at my bros place and seen and confirmed teh bad hubs .. he also said he never seen that before . just my luck huh LOL

trailer is set up for two with room for our large beach cart up in front of the skis and a box we will install in the nose .. also capable of a third ski when we dont have the cart on .. slide the two on the back further back and one sideways up front .. should be a very nice trailer when i get new hubs on ...

Have you checked the tongue weight of the trailer loaded with the ski's? Too little tongue weight can cause issues just like too much can cause other issues. The weight on the tongue should be in the 10% to 15% range of the total weight of the trailer (including all items to be carried). If your trailer is 1000 lbs. including the ski's then you should have 100 to 150 lbs of tongue weight.

On lighter trailers is actually pretty easy to check tongue weight using a bathroom scale that's on top of something like a ledge or stack of wood, just get it so the trailer sits level when the tongue is sitting on the scale (don't drop the tongue on the scale or you may be buying a new one).
