Dual purpose freeride+race skis

I haven't seen too many skis built this way, basically a hopped up 2 cyl engine (instead of a triple) in a sj or whatever that can rip buoy turns at 50+ mph and also play around in surf. Race on saturday shred on sunday...Anyone building or built something like this?

I know of maybe two builds in this style, both superjets, one had an 865 dasa and the other had a ss900 xscream billet cyl.

im thinking of doing a B1 combo just for grins. Not looking to be world champ CC racer since I am too old anyway. I like the competition of buoy racing but also like to bust up the surf. Besides, a big bore puts me in the SS class, which most guys run triples and will kick my butt with a two cylinder stroker motor. Ha, who cares....all for fun.

If the waves are big enough its anyone's game. It's about getting out there and riding. Don't need all the best parts

Agreed. Ride more, have some fun. It is not what you ride, it's how you ride it. Even stock SJ or B1 are fun, but HP and torque add MORE fun and allow a rider to get more air time with a lot less approach speed to do whatever. Change props, nozzles, plates , timing and go closed course buoy racing.

I believe the conflict is, race skis aren't allowed to have footholds,
correct?

Ylu can have them, you just have to shove stuff into them, so says the racers i ride with. The prohydrocross tour was very lax abput it anyway. Pleny of guys rode with footholds and did nothing but show up. A superjet with holds is no advantage over the sxr tray.

The guys with sxrs did not ride the surf, but the guys with superjets did. I never got to race, but my superjet is setup the same as those who did. I was practicing 3 days a week for the next season and was getting very comfortable fighting in the corners when i hurt my back. Now i cant race, which is pretty disappointing i never even got to race once after all that work. Either way, i still want bob holds.not because they are adjustable, but because they are removable. I havent been able to ride much so i havent flipped the coin but we did have a sxr and the wider tray was much more back friendly. Same on the superjet will help. Holds in for the surf, holds out for the track. Someday soon ill do the job.

just because the guys you have seen didnt ride their sxr's in surf doesnt mean it is unheard of. at our grayland open motosurf race I watched my buddy throw a barrel roll on his STOCK sxr in the race. It gets old hearing people say "you need this, you need that" just to ride. No, all you need is a running ski and some motivation/balls.

If i was making a ski to accomplish a little of both subjects, i would start with a stock ski, either variety, and keep it to lites spec. It should be plenty capable all around.

I've ridden an sxr in the surf a few times and had a blast. The only challenge was the long ride plate. Was a little awkward jumping waves and had to watch your shins but it was better than sitting on the shore!

I didn't say that a Superjet is a requirement for the surf. I just said the guys I rode with didn't take their race skis in the surf. I brought my sxr and not my Superjet to the 2015 Daytona free ride. I'm usually the guy saying to just ride whatever you have and to not waste money.

I've had a lites style ski up until last year when I bought a ported motor. Both handled the dual purpose gig pretty well and I'm in the process of building another lites engine.

And I agree you can freeride anything. One of our buddies rips a triple sxr in waves. I would be cautious of some am hulls in surf tho...especially if they don't have foam in the tray area.

Purpose of the thread was to showcase builds that went beyond the stock style build. You kbow, something more unique. Basically freestyle engines that can survive more than blipping the throttle.

I thought they didn't have a motosurf race at this years Grayland open? Not easy to do a barrel roll without footholds/strap!!
