Super Jet Educate me: Why replace intake grate?

I did some searching for a while and found this good thread about ride plates, but couldn't find much info about the intake grates, other than "install a Worx 201".

I've got a stock 99, with an 08+ prop. Runs perfect, like a dream. I would like to keep the engine all stock for now as it has very low hours and is 100% reliable.

Why would I want to replace the stock intake grate with a Worx 201?
For better hook up in rough water? What about smooth water?

If I understand the concept correctly, will the additional drag from it hooking down into the water reduce acceleration and top speed?

Thanks!

I had a Worx 201 on my '95 SNSJ, and it worked excellent for rougher water. It made the ski faster than it was with the stock and Solas intake grates I also tried, and the braking was strong (I like the braking effect for turn-in). What I found is that it kept the pump loaded MUCH better than the other grates I have.

With all that said, I'm selling the ski and have removed the 201. If you decide that's what you want, I have one for sale.

My first mod on my 07 was a 201 and I cannot imagine going back to the stock intake grate, when doing pre hops for hitting huge wakes the ski hooks up so much better and give you that initial launch power you want. when ripping faster and carving around it acts as a "underwater spoiler" and keeps your hull glued to the water much better than stock. When you let off before carving it gives you a really nice controlled braking affect that i also really like.

In combination with a 9/15 prop from impros and the grate it made my ski alot more fun to ride. I don't feel like my ski is noticeable slower but people claim maybe a 1mph loss.

I picked up a used one for around $120 since they were back ordered everywhere and they will never be worth less than that. Buy one and worst case you can sell if for what you paid but i grantee you'll keep it!

its like putting a set of drag radials on a street car!

I've used both scoop and stock grates and can't really tell a difference. I'm back to stock cause they're cheaper and the scoop grates drag in the sand when I slide up on the beach. And they can cause the stock pump shoe to break since they hang lower and all the weight of the ski is on it. (I transport my ski in the bed of my truck) just my .02

The 201 does hang below the bottom of the ski? It looked flush to me but I have not seen one installed.

I also transport the ski in the bed of my truck so that would be a deal breaker for me.

If all you care about is top speed then stay stock. If you like the pump always having water and pressure to move you foward, upgrade to a scoop grate. It does not hurt acceleration but top speed slightly. I can't imagine riding without one, anywhere.

I can't say for sure that the truck ride is what broke it but it can't help.

Not sure if the 201 is lower but the scoop grates I've used were.

Again just my opinion.

as long as its on rails or on a rug it will be fine, I cant imagine just tossing my ski into the back of my truck with nothing underneath to protect it and stop it from sliding around.

Ok, thanks for the numbers there. Should be OK.

I don't just toss it in, my ski isn't a beater ;). I slide it in onto the plastic ridged bedliner and have a strap on the nose and rear.

Finally bought a WR205 intake grate and installed it. I have not compared it to a WR201 because I've only ridden stock grates.

Took it out last weekend and wow I was pleased with the improvement. The 1999 hull has much less porpoising and handles a lot better through the any rough water from minor bumps to chop. It's more stable in smooth and rough water as well. It also feels all around faster (butt dyno) like it needed more water in the pump all the time. No downsides that I noticed. It felt better the more I rode throughout the day. Still does not handle like my 2017 but that is due to the hull design differences and not unexpected.

For reference it hangs down about 0.4" below the bottom of the hull. I took it to the lake last weekend in my truck bed with a plastic bedliner (2nd ski is on the hauler) and it was ok. It does rest on the grate though.

Only annoying thing is that Worx supplied screws that are much shorter than the OEM ride plate. I compared them by looking at the engagement with the screw installed through the plate. I also needed to deburr two of the holes to remove casting flash but that was easy.

I just installed a WORX 228 on my 2013. The pump cavitates much less and I have quite a bit more grip in tight turns at any speed. I'm able to corner more aggressively. I've noticed a small loss in top end speed and it brakes a bit harder when I let off fully. I'm pretty happy with it.
