Super Jet Electrical Issues...your thoughts??

Ok so i have an 03' superjet with a slightly modified 701. As far as electronics go it has the msd enhancer set up. The entire motor just went through a complete rebuild only about a month and a half ago. During this time the ebox was completely gone through and all electronics checked. Now unfortunately a month later and 4 full tanks of riding in I am having issues. It all started when i took a break from riding one day and let the ski sit while i sat on the boat. When i went back to ride the ski, hit the start switch and nothing happened. When the motor finally gets a signal it fires right up and i take off and ride as long as i can stay on the throttle and not fall off and choke out the motor somehow. If i do fall... I take the chances that i hit the start button and nothing happens. First thing i thought was oh its just the start kill switch. Well now i have replaced that with a brand new switch and while the problem does seem less frequent. It still happens. After riding the ski back to the boat ramp last night and putting it on the trailer it wouldnt crank on the trailer to clear the waterbox and motor of the water still in the ski. Halfway home stopped for food and behold the ski cranks... Cutt it off then wont turn over again. Pull the hood and wiggle the wires to the start switch, that doesnt change anything but then tap abox and it fires right up. Any thoughts?

First off make sure your using a Yamaha lanyard, not a Kawi
Second Since you have replaced the S/S switch take your e-box apart and double check everything, because your issue is intermittent you have to go thru your entire electrical system or your might find something that looks a little off adjust it and it just happens too start but you actually haven't fixed the problem yet, make sure your ground is tight, starter...you have to double check everything, it sucks but its the only way.... and make sure you have a fully charged battery sounds stupid but just do it, all else fails replaced your starter

possible solenoid problem...i would pull your ebox out and take a look inside make sure you dont have any wires loose or broken....i also have a complete ebox that you could use for testing and im in charlotte....pm me and i can send you my phone number

Ya! totally forgot about that stupid thing! jump the solenoid with a screwdriver to make sure

If it's an intermittent problem I would replace the solenoid relay because they go bad quite frequently and tighten all your cable connections.

you may also want to clean your start/stop connections (red/brown and the black/white) that go to the e-box. sometimes, they get dirty and will cause an intermittent condition . put some dielectric grease on it too while your at it.

Will make this happen as well. This was a thought i had from the beginning when i changed the s/s switch.. Ill clean and grease them while im at it.

Glad you got it figured out and thanks for posting your findings. Nothing worse than never hearing back on how accurate our advise actually was.

You can also have a redundant ground from the motor to electrical box...one small black wire from the electrical box to the stator is the only thing that maintains the ground for the entire electrical box....

Could I take you up on the offer to use your ebox for testing?
I'm in Greenville, SC and I'm fighting a no spark problem.
I got a coil and CDI off ebay this week and cleaned all the connectors
re installed everything and cranks like a beast but I'm not getting any spark at all.

My teaching gig is done for the summer so I could head your way anytime.

My advise bolt a redundant ground to intake manifold anyways...the OEM ground at the starter is a common weak spot.

Exactly. When I worked at the dealership, building mod skis, I usually used a 4 or 8 gauge ground. I have seen several ground wires in the stator loom, that had a bad connection, get super hot and melt the entire stator loom into a total mess. Big ground is always one of my first mods.

Hey let me know what you figure out on the "no spark." Working on a 90 model with the same issue. I just got in a used cdi and ignition coil and will try to install this week and see if that solves it. I have already checked my stator for voltage and resistance and appears to be ok with my limited knowledge on using a meter.
