put the negative test lead on the case or head bolt to see what your voltage is ?

it will show the complete starter circut voltage not just the relay output

I will try that

try load testing the battery, I've had a sealed one show 13.2 v but vent to about 1 v under load.

I wish I had a load tester, but don't. The battery is new anyhow, so I am 99.9% sure it solid.

i had the exact same problem last month. check every connection and wire... relay, stator everything. I ruled out my starter because i had a local company rebuild it... dry tested it off the battery before i installed it and everything. pulled the starter back out and one of the armitures (sp) broke off. they rebuilt it again for free and it's prefect now.

Don't forget if the battery is sulfated it will show normal voltage reading but may have close to zero cranking amps.

It's best to check the battery first with a Midtronics conductance tester to keep from chasing ghost.

If you don't have one, take it to you local auto parts store and they check it for free.

It will give an actual measurement in cold cranking amps and state of charge.

ck ur connections really well one strand of wire connection to terminal will still read good with ohms and voltage, but will not carry the current move the terminals around really well the postive on the starter corrods alot of times and only a couple of strands of wire connect it to the terminal.

1. A battery can be focked even if it shows full voltage. I had two Odyssey's with that symptom. Enough for the relay, enough for the bilge pump, but not enough for the starter.

2. I recently came across two GP1200's that had their starters go out on the same weekend. Both dead, locked up.

Make sure the battery shop knows what they're doing.
Stupid Batteries Plus tried to tell me it was fine.
I think they checked just voltage and current draw.

(It doesn't put any current out if plates are broken, that means it won't accept current, either! This also means that a battery charger will tell you the battery is fully charged!)

Correct, but jumping the relay bypassed that potential problem.
Besides, if the relay clicks, it's switching. (It may still not work, but the switching mechanism works at that point)

.

I had the same problem this June. Bat showed 13v, ran bilge like a champ, but relay would just click. Battery would not charge and showed as full. Put different battery in and fired right up. (after I had changed the relay for no reason....)

Even if the starter is weak you should hear it attempt to spin as it is not loaded and has to spin fast enough to make the idler gear do it's thing so you should hear something.
Ground cable would be my first stop.
*** mexican starter bench test....... take the starter out hook it up to a KNOWN good battery on the bench - get a 2x4 and while it's spinning, hog down on the wood like its a router.
You shouldn't be able to slow it down much and you will burn wood.

Definite yes to battery sulphation too... it can show 13+ and drop to nothing.... test your battery the same way AFTER you ruled out the starter is good
