Engine Spinning Backwards

Ok, so I'm not totally sure whats going on, and its simply word of mouth from my friend. But, he says he says he recently replaced the bendix on a friends ski, and the ski will sometimes start up and go backwards? Almost like the engine is spinning the wrong direction Anyone ever heard of this? Like i said, this is what my friend is telling me, i have not seen or experienced it first hand? Not sure if it was a pre-existing problem or not.

Timing must be massively out, or flywheel key has sheared ( or not refitted) but yes motor could run backwards.

Flywheel off, recheck stator position, flywheel and woodruff key.

A friend mentioned to check the woodruff key which is a good point. I'm betting that's it since he removed the flywheel.

Did he use the Bendix out of a Kawi by any chance? If I remember correctly, they look identical but some of the Kawi units spin in reverse.

wouldn't it have to spin in reverse cranking to start running in reverse?

Not if it fires too far before TDC and sends the piston back down.

I put a Kawi triple bendix in once and it won't even engage in a Yamaha. Just free spins and doesn't shoot out to the flywheel.

That one stumped me good for a few minutes.

My guess is timing is off. He wouldn't happen to run an epic CDI would he?

It's all stock, 650, I asked and he said his friend was going to check the woodruff key, but I haven't heard back.
