Epic with aftermarket coils?

Anyone have a problem with running the old epic with a non stock coil? Ski won't rev out with my epic and aftermarket coils. Epic with stock coil is fine and stock CID with my aftermarket coils also fine.

What kind of coils are they? Most guys are running OEM coils with aftermarket wires. The only aftermarket coils I'm aware of are MSD and they are notorious for being worse than OEM and early to fail.

I have an original epic in my ski with an OEM coil with aftermarket wires with zero issues in over 3 years.

They are double top secret coils, I could tell you but I'd have to kill you. I've been successfully running these coils for 3 years now and love them. I've had great success with the stock CDI as well as my current Advent ignition. They are also known to work well with the Vilder and Enhancer....but they don't seem to like the epic.

Yes, we have seen incompatibility with epic and non-oem parts as well as oem parts out of spec like stators that work with oem cdi but give problems with epic. Some different plug wires will give epic issues as well.

That's good and bad. Good that it's not me, bad I can't run these coils. Does the new epic have the same problems and does anyone know the reason for the incompatibility issues? Is it a resistance issue? These coils are hot and would love to run them with my epic. Thanks

In rebuilding coils I have come across many differences. Unfortunately they do not come to me with any history to know what works and what doesn't. I do know that my first gen epic works just fine with an OEM coil with solid strand tinned copper wires, which, according to many, should mess with digital ignitions. I guess resistor plugs alone are enough to suppress the disturbance.?.?.?

I don't know where they get them but some OEM coils are coming in with an adapter fitted to the spiral wound core wire before it gets inserted and epoxied into the coil. This should be the ultimate coil for digital ignitions but many are reporting issues with them as well so I am at a loss.

My guess is that, after talking to the person who originally set me on to these coils, the epic just can't keep up and the coils are leaching all the spark energy before it can regenerate quickly enough.

Odd though that all other brands appear to work. Maybe ATP will chime in. I think the stock coil is a weak link in performance it surprises me they use a stock coil for the total loss as well but I'm certainly not an expert.

Waveblaster ,i tried using my epic hx3 with a hybrid e-box that was custom built. i ran into a real issue when hooking the epic up ,because the starter solenoid was from a kawasaki and it lacked a key connection to run the digital ignition .it worked just fine with analog stuff (stock or enhancer) but the digital needs it power from the battery first not the signal from the pulse coil (if i remember correctly).just makes me wonder if you are running into something similar with a non compatible component issue>idk just throwing it out there

I have had issues with the new epic ignition recently. I have a 701 with a TBM flywheel with the new epic , a new coil from the maniac, with msd caps and it will not start without resistor plugs . Installed resistor plugs and i get 2 tanks of gas ran thru till a plug fouls. Thought about putting the stock cdi back in then spoke with Art at JetWorks and he suggested resistor caps also .. installed 5k resistor caps and have about 35gallons ran thru motor no issues .. the freak is badass in the surf now wont stop runnin

Huh funny guys mine is from jetmaniac a new yamasaki coil . oem kawi with msd plug boots ... it runs perfect now with resistor plugs and ngk 5k resistor plug boots .. did some wierd things before going to this setup Art was right digital needs all resistor parts I am a believer now the freak starts instantly and runs perfectly if i can keep water out of the engine i bet these plugs will last been in for 2 months now

I would have to disagree that the stock coil is the weak link in performance considering the crazy amount of spark energy our TS2 is delivering with this very coil. I would suspect if you are having problems with after market coils they are simply out of spec, maybe they are trying to jack the voltage up so high the insulation can't hack it and you have internal breakdown which will cause havoc with a true digital ignition. In my experience a stock Yam or Kwak coil with resistor rated plugs is perfect. Do you know the country of origin of these coils?
Chris.

They're made in the US. Between a buddy and I we have been running these coils since the late 90s. This is the first ignition we've had an issue with but like you said its digital so perhaps that's the issue.

I'm far from an expert and don't claim to be. I just am not sure what would cause the issue.

The total loss with the stock coil goes against everything I've ever known so that whole idea blows my mind. That being said my other friend has a flame and I want to try these coils on his setup.

These coils are legit, they are not like eBay coils or anything like that. Just want to know why they don't get along with the epic. Currently working on a possible solution.

How can anyone answer your question if you won't say what the coils are? Please don't take this as a personal attack, but this is stupid. I don't understand the secret crap. We aren't racing against each other. This is a forum where information is meant to be shared and we help each other.
